history

The first documentary mention was made in 1128 as "the old burgk Hebalzhym" (later also called "Habelsheim", "Habchstal" and finally, since the 17th century, "Habelsee"). In a manuscript from the years 1167/95, in which the donations of a noble Franconian gentleman are recorded, which he made around 900, the place is mentioned as "Habelsheim". It can therefore be assumed that this place already existed in the 9th century. The original manor house is likely to have given way to the castle that still exists today, which belonged to the Counts of Hohenlohe-Entsee. It was initially given as a fiefdom to the knights of Habelsheim, and subsequently to other knights from the Hohenlohe lordship. In 1392 Habelsee was sold to the imperial city of Rothenburg, which needed this castle as a border fortress of the imperial city area. In the following years there were frequent changes of ownership, sometimes it was misused as an agricultural building or remained uninhabited for a long time. In 1979 the castle was renovated and attempts were made to restore it to its original appearance.

The monastery Heilsbronn acquired in the 13th century by gifting some goods and gradients in Habelsee. At that time there was already the St. Michaels Church , which was a branch of Mörlbach.

With the community edict (early 19th century), Habelsee was assigned to the Steinach tax district . A little later, the rural community Habelsee was formed, to which the Seemühle belonged. In terms of jurisdiction and administration, it was subject to the Rothenburg Regional Court . The municipality had an area of 5.716 km². In the course of the territorial reform , this was incorporated on May 1, 1978 in Ohrbach.
