At the place there was originally a castle ( Old Castle ), which belonged to the Lords of Banner and was built around 1100. After these died out, it came into the possession of the Hohenlohe family . In 1367 Gerlach and Gottfried von Hohenlohe sold the castle and its location to the imperial city of Rothenburg . In 1407, on imperial orders, the Endsee Castle was demolished and razed. This was preceded by a dispute between Burgrave Friedrich von Nürnberg and the imperial city of Rothenburg.

Under the leadership of the French general Ezéchiel de Mélac , French murder torches are said to have set fire to 35 houses and caused considerable damage in November 1688.

With the community edict (early 19th century) Endsee was assigned to the tax district Steinach . A little later, the rural community of Endsee was formed. It was subordinate to the regional court of Rothenburg in administration and jurisdiction . By 1840 at the latest, Gypshütte was renamed from Hartershofen . The municipality had an area of 7.108 km². In the course of the territorial reform , this was incorporated into Steinsfeld on May 1, 1978.

Until 1975 the place had a stop on the Steinach railway line near Rothenburg – Dombühl .
