The village is located on a tributary of the Steinbach, a right tributary of the Tauber . The district road AN 8 leads to Nordenberg (2 km east) or to Steinsfeld to state road 2419 (1.7 km west). Communal roads lead to Urphershofen (1.5 km northeast), to Schweinsdorf (2.5 km south) and past the Gypshütte to state road 2416 (2.6 km north). Immediately to the east of the village there is a stop for the Steinach bei Rothenburg – Dombühl railway line running in north-south direction .

history

The basic word of the place name "-hofen" indicates a foundation from the time of the Franconian development in the 7th or 8th century (Hartradshofen = Hof des Hartrad). The earliest documented mention comes from the year 1171, when the Würzburg bishop Reginhard von Abenberg donated goods in Hartershofen to the Ansbach monastery of St. Gumbert . In 1268 a Si (fridus) de Hartrashouen witnessed a Rothenburg document; he appeared among a group of twelve witnesses, who were probably the first members of the Rothenburg Council known by name. In 1289, Marquard Hübschmann sold the Heilsbronn monastery a slope in Hartershofen. In the late Middle Ages and the beginning of the modern era, the landowners in the village were mainly members of the Rothenburg patriciate: in the 14th century the Hartrad , in the 15th century the Trüb, who also owned the now-defunct Hartershofen Castle, and later the Wernitzer.

In November 1688, under the leadership of the French general Ezéchiel de Mélac , French murder torches set 42 houses on fire and caused considerable damage.

With the community edict (early 19th century) Hartershofen was assigned to the tax district of Steinsfeld . A little later, the rural community Hartershofen was formed, to which Gypshütte and Urphershofen belonged. It was subordinate to the regional court of Rothenburg in administration and jurisdiction . In 1840 at the latest, Gypshütte was reassigned to Endsee . The municipality had an area of 5.904 km². In the course of the territorial reform , this was incorporated into Steinsfeld on May 1, 1978.
