history

Gattenhofen has probably had its own church since the 10th century, which was raised to an independent parish on May 17, 1333. The parish currently has around 250 parishioners, in 1745 there were 406 and in 1776 398.

Under the leadership of the French general Ezéchiel de Mélac , French murder torches are said to have set fire to 69 houses and caused considerable damage in November 1688. In 1799 there were 46 households in the parish village.

With the community edict (early 19th century) the tax district Gattenhofen was formed, to which Ellwingshofen belonged. A little later, the rural community of Gattenhofen was formed, to which the Chausseehaus belonged. It was subordinate to the regional court of Rothenburg in administration and jurisdiction . The municipality had an area of 9.537 km². On April 1, 1971, the community of Bettwar was incorporated with the junk mill . In the course of the territorial reform , this was incorporated into Steinsfeld on May 1, 1978.
