Joseph Mutton

Joseph Hammels (born January 26, 1868 in Aachen , † January 3, 1944 in Cologne ) was a German Roman Catholic clergyman who was auxiliary bishop in Cologne from 1924 .

Life

Hammels attended the Stiftsschule and the Kaiser-Karls-Gymnasium in Aachen and studied Catholic theology at the Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität Münster and the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn . In Münster, the Germania Catholic Student Association joined the Cartel Association of Catholic German Student Associations . In Bonn he was employed by the K.St.V. Arminia active, where he held the office of fox major twice in a row .

After completing his studies, he entered the seminary in Cologne . On August 15, 1894, he was ordained a priest in Cologne and became chaplain at St. Quirinus Minster in Neuss . In 1903 he became rector , later pastor , at St. Antonius in Oberhausen - Alstaden . From here he went to Essen - Borbeck as a pastor in 1912 and to Cologne in 1922, where he became pastor at St. Gereon .

After Pope Pius XI. On January 14, 1924, he was appointed titular bishop of Soli and auxiliary bishop in Cologne, Archbishop Karl Joseph Schulte donated him episcopal ordination on February 24, 1924 and appointed him to the Cologne cathedral chapter that same year . In 1931 Hammels was appointed cathedral dean by the archbishop .

From 1933 until his death, Hammels was a Grand Prior to the First Council of the German Lieutenancy of the Knightly Order of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem .
