The women's handball FDGB Cup was held for the 7th time in the 1976/77 season and for the first time teams from the handball league took part. The TSC Berlin made loss-point free for the finals tournament in Eberswalde the double of league and cup perfect.

The respective representatives of the districts of Neubrandenburg , Potsdam , Leipzig , Gera and Suhl could not qualify for the handball FDGB Cup 1976/77 through qualifying games.

In the first main round, which was played in the knockout system , all qualified teams took part and the district representatives enjoyed home advantage over higher-class teams. From the second main round, the competition continued with home and away games. The draw was based on the most territorial aspects possible and games with a tie were immediately decided in the 7-meter throw. After the 3rd main round, the last five teams then determined the cup winners in a final tournament.
