Games of the preliminary round
In the preliminary round, the German team faced Ukraine , Paraguay and South Korea .
Germany - Ukraine 26:21 (17:12)
(December 2nd, 2007 in Nantes , Palais des sports de Beaulieu , 4,500 spectators)
The German team got off to an excellent start in the so-called death group, with a win against Ukraine. The nervousness of the players could be felt on both sides, but an excellent performance by Grit Jurack and goalkeeper Sabine Englert provided the necessary support in the team. The Ukrainian player Oksana Sakada sustained a serious injury when she hit her back hard on the ground after a throw at the German goal and broke several vertebrae. After an initial examination, the doctors thought the rupture of three lumbar vertebrae and thus spinal cord injury was possible.
Germany: Englert, Woltering; Härdter, Jurack (9/1), Wörz, Anne Müller (2), Reiche, Loerper (1), Nadine Krause (4/1), Blacha (1), Susann Müller, Brückmann, Baumbach (5), Melbeck (4 )
Paraguay - Germany 12:45 (6:25)
(3rd December 2007 in Nantes , Palais des sports de Beaulieu , 4,000 spectators)
The game against Paraguay was the expected easy task. A never-endangered victory and Ukraine's defeat against South Korea gave the German team an early entry into the main round.
The height of the victory also meant the highest victory of a German national team. The old record came from November 30, 1999, when the German team beat Argentina 34: 9 during the World Cup in Denmark.
Germany: Englert, Woltering; Härdter (5), Wörz, Anne Müller (3), Reiche (6/3), Loerper (4), Hering (6), Nadine Krause (5/2), Blacha (3), Susann Müller (2/1) , Brückmann (6), Baumbach (3), Melbeck (2)
Germany - South Korea 32:26 (14:12)
(4th December 2007 in Nantes , Palais des sports de Beaulieu , 4,000 spectators)
Even the Olympic second South Korea could not stop the German team. A strong Grit Jurack and the world class performance of Sabine Englert were the outstanding players.
Germany: Englert, Woltering; Härdter (1), Jurack (11/2), Wörz (2), Anne Müller (1), Reiche (1), Loerper (1), Hering (2), Nadine Krause (3), Blacha (5), Susann Müller, Baumbach (2), Melbeck (3)
Main round games
In the main round, the German team met Spain , Hungary , Poland and Romania . The 2 points for the victory against South Korea were taken into the main round.
Spain - Germany 25:30 (8:14)
(December 6, 2007 in Dijon , Palais des sports Jean-Michel Geoffroy , 2,500 spectators)
The German team continued to win at the start of the main round. The German players immediately took over the reins and quickly led with a difference of 6 hits. Only the negligence in the first half prevented an even higher half-time score. After half-time, the Spaniards got back into the game better and reduced the gap to just 2 goals. But an increase in concentration eventually led to victory.
Germany: Englert, Woltering; Härdter (1), Jurack (9), Wörz (2), Anne Müller (1), Reiche (1), Loerper, Hering (5), Nadine Krause (9/2), Blacha, Susann Müller, Baumbach (1) , Melbeck (1)
Germany - Hungary 30:30 (14:17)
(December 8, 2007 in Dijon , Palais des sports Jean-Michel Geoffroy , 3,000 spectators)
In the first half, the German team was very nervous and made a few missed throws and playback errors. The Hungarians knew how to use that, they wanted to return the favor for the high defeat at the EM-2006 , and were able to play a small lead at halftime. After half time the game of the German players got better. A great team performance meanwhile resulted in a 2-goal lead. About 45 seconds before the end, a goal for Germany was not counted that would have restored the old 2-goal lead, because coach Emrich shortly beforehand indicated the desire to take a break. The subsequent throw did not result in a goal. In return, the Hungarians equalized 1 second before the final whistle.
Germany: Englert, Woltering; Härdter, Jurack (6), Wörz (4), Anne Müller (3), Reiche (5/3), Loerper, Hering (3), Nadine Krause (3/1), Blacha (2), Susann Müller, Baumbach ( 2), Melbeck (2)
Germany - Poland 35:32 (22:12)
(December 9, 2007 in Dijon , Palais des sports Jean-Michel Geoffroy , 2,800 spectators)
For the first fifteen minutes the game against Poland was even, no team was able to break away with more than two goals difference. After that, the German women became more confident in their actions and played a sovereign lead up to half-time. In the second half the game of the Germans flattened, Poland could catch up to 2 goals, but in the end the German team trembled about a victory and took over the top of the table in Group M II again.
Germany: Englert, Woltering; Härdter, Jurack (12/2), Wörz (1), Anne Müller (3), Reiche (1), Loerper, Hering (3), Nadine Krause (6/1), Blacha, Susann Müller, Baumbach (6), Melbeck (3)
Romania - Germany 32:24 (16:12)
(11 December 2007 in Dijon , Palais des sports Jean-Michel Geoffroy , 3,000 spectators)
An unexciting tactical game. Germany didn't really want to win in order not to play against hosts France in the quarter-finals and Romania really wanted to win so as not to play against Russia in the quarter-finals.
Germany: Englert, Woltering; Härdter (3), Jurack (3/1), Wörz (1), Anne Müller, Reiche (4/2), Loerper, Hering, Nadine Krause (1), Blacha (3), Brückmann (3), Baumbach, Melbeck (6)
Games of the knockout round
Angola - Germany 33:36 (14:18)
Quarter finals
(December 13, 2007 in Paris , Palais Omnisports de Paris-Bercy , 9,000 spectators)
The surprise team of the tournament was on the program in the quarter-finals. The German team always had the game under control. There was a quick lead that could be held until the break. After the break, Angola's game became more agreeable and the gap narrowed. In a dramatic final phase, the German selection was finally able to prevail.
Germany: Englert, Woltering; Härdter (1), Jurack (11/1), Wörz (1), Anne Müller (3), Reiche (1/1), Loerper, Hering (2), Nadine Krause (6/1), Blacha (1), Stange, Baumbach (4/1), Melbeck (6)
Norway - Germany 33:30 (19:16)
Semifinals
(December 15, 2007 in Paris , Palais Omnisports de Paris-Bercy , 13,000 spectators)
In the semifinals it was against the reigning European champion. The Norwegians were able to play their known strengths, especially the fast game forward, and had the very nervous German team under control in the first half. After the break, Emrich's players became safer and they even led the game with a goal until five minutes before the end. Then Stefanie Melbeck, who had been playing a strong game up until then, was injured. This weakened defense and individual mistakes ultimately led to victory for Norway.
Germany: Englert, Woltering; Härdter (3), Rösler, Jurack (12/2), Wörz (1), Anne Müller (2), Reiche, Loerper, Hering, Nadine Krause (5), Blacha, Baumbach (4), Melbeck (3)
Romania - Germany 35:36 (18:11, 32:32) n.v.
3rd place match
(December 16, 2007 in Paris , Palais Omnisports de Paris-Bercy , 14,000 spectators)
The German handball players went into this game highly motivated, because after ten years there was again the opportunity to win a medal. But the game didn't go as expected. Up to half time they were behind with seven goals difference. After the break, they pulled themselves together again and in the meantime managed to equalize. But due to another strong phase from Romania, they were behind by the same difference as at halftime. But the players showed a strong will and were able to catch up again the high deficit. The decision finally came ten seconds before the end. Nadine Krause was able to turn a seven-meter throw into the lead in the second attempt, the first one had hit the post.
Germany: Englert, Woltering; Härdter (5), Jurack (12), Rösler, Wörz (2), Anne Müller (1), Reiche (1), Loerper, Hering, Nadine Krause (6/1), Blacha, Baumbach (8), Melbeck (1 )
