Hans Hammerschmid , also Hans Hammerschmidt (born March 12, 1930 in Vienna ; pseudonym Henry Stuck ) is an Austrian composer , film composer , arranger , pianist and conductor .

Biographical information

Hans Hammerschmid finished his school career in Vienna with the Matura . He studied piano , composition and conducting at the Vienna Music Academy . In 1947 Hammerschmid was awarded the Mozart Prize in his hometown. This led him to Hollywood , where he composed his first film music in 1952 .

Hammerschmid then worked as a jazz pianist and arranger. He was a member of Hans Koller's quintet and the Südwestfunk dance orchestra and led his own group; He performed with the Eddie Sauter Orchestra at the Frankfurt Jazz Festival in 1958 and worked with well-known instrumentalists such as Stan Getz , Dusko Goykovich , Zoot Sims , Attila Zoller , the singer Helen Merrill and the Johannes Fehring orchestra . From the 1960s onwards, Hammerschmid created arrangements and compositions for the Bambis , Ian Cussick , Miriam Frances , Curd Jürgens ( 60 years - and not a bit wise ), Julia Migenes , Esther & Abi Ofarim , Anneliese Rothenberger , Klaus Sommer , Donna Summer , Suzie , Margot Werner , Helmut Zacharias and many others. At the 11th Grand Prix Eurovision de la Chanson in 1966 , Hammerschmid conducted the orchestra of the winning song Merci, Chérie by Udo Jürgens .

In the same year Hammerschmid got to know the actors, chanson singer and author Hildegard Knef on the occasion of a New Year's Eve TV show . The composer and arranger was musical director of most of Knef's recordings from 1967 to 1975. The interpreter herself wrote the lyrics for numerous titles. The collaboration between Knef and Hammerschmid comprised a total of seven music albums. Well-known songs by the team of authors include From now on it went downhill , For me it should rain red roses and I need a change of scenery .

Since the 1960s, Hammerschmid has composed numerous pieces of music for German television films and episodes of well-known television series such as Das Kriminalmuseum , Der Alte , Derrick , Insel der Träume and Das Traumschiff . In 1985 the music for the successful series Die Schwarzwaldklinik followed , the theme music ( Hallo Dr. B. ) being one of Hammerschmid's best-known works as a film composer. His instrumental Big Train , composed for Max Greger in 1966, gained fame in Great Britain after it was used as the theme music for the comedy show of the same name from 1998 to 2002. In addition, Hammerschmid created radio plays as well as recordings for music publishers and advertising .

In 1993, as part of the Berlin premiere of the musical Tell me, where the flowers are from Friedrich Kurz to Marlene Dietrich, after almost 20 years, a collaboration with Hildegard Knef took place again. Hammerschmid composed the chanson Marlene , texted by Knef , which appeared on a maxi CD together with the songs arranged by Hammerschmid Tell me where the flowers are and I still have a suitcase in Berlin . Numerous joint works by Hammerschmid and Knef have been re-recorded time and again, including by Lee Buddah , Extrabreit , Justus Köhncke , Heike Makatsch , Nylon , Max Raabe and Rosenstolz .

In 2016 he was awarded the Great Decoration of Honor for Services to the Republic of Austria .
