Hazmat Modine is an American blues and roots music band from New York , which was founded in 1998 by Wade Schuman and Randy Weinstein and which has gained greater fame since 2006. By combining different musical styles such as blues , rock steady , Calypso and Klezmer and numerous live performances in North America, Europe and Asia, the band has a name in world music - Genre made.

The name of the band is made up of " Hazmat ", one in English common portmanteau for hazardous material , so dangerous , and together called "Modine," a reference to the as Modine known, mostly commercial heaters of air conditioners manufacturer Modine Manufacturing Company . Schuman found this reference appropriate, as his band's wind instruments would produce "a lot of hot air".

history

Band founder and lead singer Wade Schuman (born 1962) is considered excellent harmonica player and has as a session musician on Joan Osborne's four times Grammy -nominated album Relish in 1995 and most recently at the awarded the Grammy 2010 album High, Wide and Handsome by Loudon Wainwright III participated.

After moving from Michigan to New York in the late 1990s, the New York Academy of Art art lecturer and award-winning painter began putting together a band to implement his own musical ideas. He soon found a colleague in Randy Weinstein, the long-time second harmonica player in the band. They built Hazmat Modine into a band that consists of a solid core of eight to nine members, with various guest musicians and sometimes former band members performing regularly. The band consists of experienced studio and live musicians from various genres of music. For example, the renowned jazz musician Joe Daley plays the tuba . A frequent guest on concert tours is Rachelle Garniez on the accordion and the claviola .

The interaction and the call and response passages of the two harmonica players Wade Schuman and Bill Barrett (or Randy Weinstein on the band's first CD) were a recurring feature in the band's songs. In addition, numerous other wind instruments are used, such as tuba , trumpet , saxophone , sarrusophone and also more exotic instruments such as sheng or claviola. These are usually accompanied by drums, percussion and various guitars ( acoustic and electric guitar , Hawaiian guitar , banjitar).

In 2006 (in Europe only in 2007) the debut album Bahamut was released , the material of which had been recorded between 2003 and 2005 and which reached number 12 in the Top Blues Albums category on the Billboard charts . The name of the album refers to the figure of the fish Bahamut from Arabic mythology, who swims in baseless waters, supposedly carrying the whole world on his shoulders.

Critics attest the band's great originality in terms of the mix of different musical styles. While in some moments the blues of the 20s and 30s sounded through, in other moments you would have the impression of listening to an Eastern European brass band. On three tracks on Bahamut , befriended singers of the Tuvinian band Huun-Huur-Tu , who are known for their characteristic overtone singing , also take part. Schuman stated in an interview that the music of his band reflects the diverse influences of the "melting pot New York". He himself was strongly influenced by early blues music, but was also heavily involved with Romanian folk music. The other band members, on the other hand, would also bring Cuban, Jamaican or jazz and klezmer influences into the band.

In 2009, co-founder Randy Weinstein, who had appeared on various records by jazz singer Karrin Allyson in the 1990s and is co-author of the book Complete Idiot's Guide to Playing the Harmonica , left the band to start his own jazz project, the Randy Weinstein Group , to found. He was replaced by Bill Barrett.
