Henry Goode Blasdel

Henry Goode Blasdel (born January 29, 1825 in Lawrenceburg , Dearborn County , Indiana , † July 22, 1900 in Oakland , California ) was an American politician and the first governor of the new state of Nevada .

Early years and political advancement

Henry Blasdel attended local schools in his home country. He worked in the mining industry, as a farmer , shop owner, and captain of a river steamer before moving to Nevada in 1859. Blasdel was a member of the Republican Party . In 1862 he was elected city magistrate in Storey County and in 1864 as his party's candidate for first governor of Nevada.

Governor of Nevada

Blasdel took up his new office on December 5, 1864. After re-election in 1866, he was able to remain in office until January 2, 1871. During this time, a functioning government apparatus first had to be built in Nevada. Plans to build the Capitol have also begun. During his reign, Blasdel also had to deal with an Indian revolt.

After the end of his time as governor, Blasdel withdrew from politics. In 1891 he moved to California. He died there on July 22, 1900. Henry Blasdel was married to Sara Jane Cox, with whom he had three children.
