Herwig Pöschl

Herwig Pöschl (* 1950 in Oberndorf near Salzburg ) is an Austrian musician , cultural manager and curator . He has lived and worked in Berlin since 2009.

Live and act

Studies

Herwig Pöschl studied (1969–1971) composition and music with Mauricio Kagel and Iannis Xenakis in Cologne and with Karl-Heinz Stockhausen in Darmstadt . At that time he also completed instrumental studies with Christoph Caskel (percussion) in Frankfurt as well as studies in “composition and percussion” at the Mozarteum Salzburg.

There were also (1972–1976) studies in psychology and psychiatry with Igor Alexander Caruso and music psychology with Wilhelm Revers at the University of Salzburg (without a degree).

Activity as a musician

Herwig Pöschl was a member of the "Ensemble for New Music" (Cologne) founded by Mauricio Kagel in 1970 as a drummer , and then also played in well-known ensembles of new music such as "Spontan Music Group" (1971), " en: Just Music " ( 1971–1972), as well as in “Schallmomente” (1971–1974), before he had to quit working as a musician in 1974 due to an inherited muscle weakness.

Herwig Pöschl founded the "Institute for Everyday Culture" (IAK, with Raimund Gutmann) in 1981. Until 1990 he worked here (mostly on behalf of the Austrian Chancellor Bruno Kreisky ) on development projects for cultural, social and economic change in mining and industrial areas, such as B. In 1992 the "International Center for Culture and Management" (ICCM) was founded, first in Gmunden (until 1995) and then in Salzburg, which from 1992 acted instead of the BFI as the organizational provider of training under the direction of Pöschl. In 1997, the course was converted into a postgraduate university course "European Management Program for the Arts and Media" with the degree " Master of Advanced Studies (Arts and Media Management)" and the requirement of general cultural management training for all areas.

In 2004 the JKU - ICCM cooperation agreement was terminated and the course offered by the University of Linz was ended. The training was then continued in cooperation with ICCM - SMBS - University of Salzburg Business School (also in cooperation with Columbia College Chicago and Fudan University in Shanghai) as an MBA "International Arts Management" (until the ICCM went bankrupt in 2008).

Between 1989 and 2008, around 1000 cultural managers from 60 countries of origin were trained in these courses .

International Summer Academy for Culture Management / Salzburg Culture Forum

From 1990 to 2005 Herwig Pöschl headed the "International Summer Academy for Cultural Management" in Salzburg, a so-called "Capacity Building Training Project" founded jointly with Kulturkontakt Austria , which, according to the aim of Kulturkontakt Austria, is primarily aimed at participants from Eastern and Southeastern European cultural projects should develop and make it marketable. After Kulturkontakt Austria left the project (2003), it was continued for two years in cooperation with the Open Society Foundations by George Soros as the “Salzburg Culture Forum” for participants especially from the USSR successor states in Central Asia.

Herwig Pöschl also developed, in cooperation with the communication scientist Kurt Luger at the University of Salzburg, a "university course for cultural journalism and cultural public relations", which was offered from 1994–1997 with the ICCM as the organizational sponsor.

“Music for Film & Media” at Danube University Krems

Starting in 2007, Herwig Pöschl developed a “Master's degree in Music for Film & Media” in cooperation with the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and the composer Peter Wolf , first for the ICCM itself and then for the Danube University Krems . This postgraduate course ( Master of Arts degree - MA) combines composition studies for various media formats (film, TV, interactive digital media and business audio) with the latest audio technology and music business knowledge. It started in a slightly modified form in 2013 at Danube University Krems .
