The Hochalpl , Italian Monte Oregone , is 2384  m above sea level. A. or 2385  m slm high summit of the eastern Carnic main ridge between St. Lorenzen in Carinthia (Austria) and the northern Italian towns of Sappada ( Veneto ) and Forni Avoltri ( Friuli-Venezia Giulia ).

Location and landscape

The mountain is located between the Lesachtal (the top Gail Valley ), the Val Visdende of Cadore and the Canale di Gorto (Val Degano, Deganotal) Carnia , on the Austrian-Italian border , 22 kilometers south of Lienz (East Tyrol) and 33 kilometers northwest of Tolmezzo .

The grassy summit rises largely inconspicuously in the ridge, only its northeast flank breaks off as a rock face over 250 m. The main ridge runs northwest over the Hochalpljoch (Passo dell'Oregone, 2278/81 m), to the Weißsteinspitze (Monte Tap de Cadene, 2479/80 m) and then to the Torkarspitze (Monte Pietra Bianca, 2574/73 m), and north-east over the Bladner Joch (Passo dei Sappadini, 2127/26 m) and Öfner Joch (Giogo Veranis, 2011 m) to the Raudenspitze (Monte Fleons, 2507 m). The side ridge leads southwest to the dominant Monte Peralba (Hochweißstein, 2674 m), and then over the Chiadenis  (2490 m) south into the Carnic Pre-Alps ( Southern Carnic Alps ). To the north rises the Zwölferspitz  ( 2592  m above sea level ), to the south-east the massif of Monte Avanza  ( 2481  m asl ).

Politically, the summit belongs to the municipality of Lesachtal in the Hermagor district , to Santo Stefano di Cadore in the Province of Belluno and to Forni Avoltri in the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region , thus forming the triangle of Carinthia / Veneto / Friuli-Venezia Giulia.

The northern flank drains to the Frohnbach , which flows into the Gail at St. Lorenzen , a tributary of the Drau to the Danube . In the west lies a high valley that drains over the Torrente Cordevole to the Piave and into the Adriatic Sea. To the southeast lies the headwaters of the Torrente Degano , which as a tributary of the Tagliamento also goes into the Adriatic. The summit thus belongs to the Mediterranean – Black Sea watershed .

history

Raudenspitze, Chiadenis and Avanza were of great strategic importance on the Alpine front during the First World War. The Hochalpl as the pivot point was crisscrossed by trenches that are still visible today.

Ascent

The mountain can be easily climbed from all sides and valley locations, also as a ski tour.

The base on the Austrian side is the Hochweißsteinhaus  ( 1867  m above sea level ), from which one climbs up via Hochalpljoch and Bladnerjoch. The Karnische Höhenweg  (403), here also the E10 , Südalpenweg  (03), Kärntner Grenzweg  (KGW) and Via Alpina runs there .

On the Italian side there is the Rifugio Calvi  ( 2167  m slm ) to the south and the Casera Fleons di sotto  (1600 m) to the east under the Öfnerjoch  , the high alpine pasture Fleons di sopra (approx. 1880 m) are some shelters.

The north-east face with UIAA  VII + is one of the most difficult climbing routes in the Carnic Alps.
