In the northern part of Gothaer Land, in the city triangle between Gotha , Bad Langensalza and Erfurt , the municipality of Hochheim is located in the fertile Nessetal. The place is near the federal highway 247 on the southern foothills of the Hainich in about 269 to 290 m above sea level. NN. The neighboring towns are Goldbach in the south , Westhausen in the east, Wangenheim in the west and Wiegleben in the north.

To the north of the location, meadows and fields extend to Wiegleber Holz and one of the largest wind farms in Thuringia. The northern Hochheimer Flur is also part of the watershed of the Elbe and Weser . The Nesse (the largest tributary of the Hörsel ) flows west in the damp lowlands on the southern edge of the town . Here monks built the artificially created mill moat with the associated knight mill in the 15th century. The Tiefenbornsteich ( location ) and a larger swamp area, which historically had a greater significance, are located on the western boundary of Wangenheim .

Early history

Hochheim, sometimes also called "Loh-Hochheim", was first mentioned in a document in 778 in a deed of donation to the diocese of Fulda .

In the vicinity of the Tiefenbornsteich, exploratory excavations in the Hochheimer Flur and the nearby Seefeld settlement near Wangenheim uncovered the remains of the ceramic band culture. Archaeologists made the oldest gold find in Thuringia there. A Roman settlement on Tiefenbornsteich has also been archaeologically proven.

Hochheim belonged to the Wangenheim Court in the Duchy of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg or Saxe-Coburg and Gotha after the acquisition of the Diocese of Fulda by the Lords of Wangenheim until the patrimonial courts were repealed in the mid- 19th century . The Lords of Wangenheim and von Uechtritz owned properties in the village .

Hochheim also owned a larger castle and two manors , one of which is still preserved. Only the foundations of the former castle remain, which are covered by new structures. Document mentions report that still in the 16th century. the grain ships of the diocese of Fulda up to the upper reaches of the Nesse at the height of Wangenheim and Haina drove in the grain tributes of the higher places like Hochheim.

Younger story

Hochheim was handed over to the US troops in April 1945 without major fighting . After it was taken over by the Soviet occupiers, the war memorial was moved to what is now the cemetery area to protect it from demolition. After the end of the Second World War , numerous refugees came to Hochheim from the German eastern regions of Silesia , Pomerania , Sudetenland and East Prussia . The LPG "Freier Bauer" and later the KAP Nessetal were founded on the old estates .

After the political change and the reunification , the agricultural cooperative Goldbach took over the agricultural land and the livestock. The townscape has been spruced up to this day by a clever budgetary policy of the active mayor . In addition, the place was equipped with a modern sewer system and all streets were renovated without the citizens having to pay for them. The church is now debt free.

In 2015 the St. Nicholas Church was inaugurated again after a two-year renovation period. Just as they were former kindergarten in a town house converted, the school kitchen, the fire station and sports field renovation and a playground built.

On January 1, 2019, the previously independent communities of Hochheim, Ballstädt , Bufleben , Friedrichswerth , Goldbach , Haina , Brüheim , Remstädt , Wangenheim , Warza and Westhausen were merged to form the rural community of Nessetal . Hochheim was a member of the Mittleres Nessetal administrative association .

Sons of Hochheim

The two internationally best-known citizens of Hochheim are Meister Eckart (* around 1260 in Hochheim, † on April 30, 1328 in Avignon ) and Dominique Görlitz (* 1966):

Master Eckhart

Eckhart von Hochheim (known as Meister Eckhart, also Eckehart) was an influential late medieval theologian and philosopher. “His main concern was the dissemination of principles for a consistent spiritual life practice in everyday life. His unconventional, sometimes provocatively worded statements caused a sensation ... Controversial was his statement, for example, that the ' soul ground ' was not created by God like everything created, but divine and uncreated. "( Gert Weber 2015). This earned him a long inquisition process, which was finally reopened and brought to an end at the papal court in Avignon . Eckhart died before the proceedings were completed.

Eckhart's ideas had a considerable influence on late medieval spirituality in the German and Dutch regions. Master Eckhart's religious thoughts served the artist Gert Weber as inspiration for the design of the church window in Hochheim.

Dominique Goerlitz

Dominique Görlitz (born June 15, 1966 in Gotha) is a Thuringian experimental archaeologist , author, filmmaker and lecturer. In his hometown of Hochheim, he started his first experiments with small reed boats near the Tiefenbornteich in the early 1980s. He later became known primarily as a “Stone Age sailor” through his ABORA reed boat expeditions across the Mediterranean and the Atlantic . With this he is continuing the work of the Norwegian Thor Heyerdahl . In 2012 he received his doctorate in biogeography from the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg . As a transdisciplinary researcher, he works in many specialist areas. He is currently working as a postdoc at the Technical University of Dresden .

Culture and sights

Choir window by Gert Weber in the St. Nikolaus Church "God's birth in the human soul" - the theology of Meister Eckhart inspired the artist to design it

St. Nicholas Church

The building was erected in the 15th century in the late Gothic style with a rectangular choir tower. In 1411 it was first mentioned as a pilgrimage church. In the years 1516, 1616, 1716 and 1856 several alterations were made. In 1616 a choir was added to the nave. The interior was modernized through multiple alterations in the 18th and 19th centuries, the current version is based on the building renovation carried out in 1875. In April 2015, the church with its new choir window (see below) was inaugurated after extensive construction work. The massive, Romanesque baptismal font probably comes from the previous church.

Planned work is the renovation of the winter church, the repair of the sacristy, which has been infected by the sponge, and other small internal work on the masonry.

The organ comes from the organ builder workshop of Rudolf Böhm from Gotha . It is still in good condition, original and has only recently undergone minor repairs.

The stained glass window "God's birth in the human soul"

On the initiative of the women’s group of the Hochheim parish, a colored window painting was commissioned in honor of Master Eckhart von Hochheim. It was these women who, by collecting money, laid the financial basis for the project. But several years passed before the people of Hochheim were able to fulfill their wish for this work of art in the church's choir.

The painter Gert Weber from Graefenhain , Thuringia, was won over for the artistic design . This technologically extraordinary project was realized in cooperation with the internationally renowned Derix glass studio from Taunusstein . The inauguration was on April 26, 2015. Since then, this important work of art has been open to all visitors daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. in the St. Nicholas Church.

The Hochheim Fanfare Train

The Fanfarenzug Hochheim was re-established in 2007 after a 25-year break. Rolf Janson laboriously acquired new instruments on a private initiative and started again with the old players. Since then, the association has continuously developed and expanded its musical repertoire . He has z. B. some pieces with bagpipes in the game board. A fanfare procession with over 50% children together with a bagpiper - this combination is unique in Germany.

On the occasion of the town's 1225th anniversary, the war memorial was restored with donations from the citizens; it bears the names of those who fell from the First and Second World Wars and those persecuted by Stalinism

SV Blauweiss Goldbach / Hochheim eV

The Handball is high home national sport since the founding of the sports club "Eintracht 1947". Unlike today, handball was then full-field handball and was practiced almost exclusively as an outdoor sport. As a reminder: Back then, football goals were played. The goal area circle was 13 m, there was a penalty throw from 14 m away and the free-throw line was 19 m away from the goal. As early as 1965, Eintracht Hochheim merged with the Goldbacher handball club SV Blauweiss Goldbach / Hochheim. In the first decades of the club he won the district championship title several times. In 1987, the entire club split up into the two local clubs for the first time. After the reunification , both clubs merged again in 1998. Between 2014 and 2015, they merged with the Gotha handball team . Since 2016, the handball players from SV Blauweiss Goldbach / Hochheim have been going their separate ways again. For more than four decades, Winfried Wagner made an outstanding contribution to handball in Hochheim. For many generations he devoted himself to the sporting offspring of Hochheim and the neighboring villages. Today, his son Andreas Wagner and the Goldbacher Frau Guter take care of the promotion of young talent.

The war memorial

The war memorial was made in 1871 after the Franco-German War . However, until 2004 only the favor of the First World War were honored there. On the occasion of the town's 1225th anniversary, the war memorial was extensively restored by the citizens and their donations. The dead and missing of the Second World War as well as those persecuted by Stalinism are now also mentioned by name. Even the fallen fathers and brothers from Silesia, Pomerania and the other eastern German regions, whose relatives came to Hochheim, find their honorable memory here.

Wind turbines

Hochheim is part of the Wangenheim-Hochheim - Westhausen - Ballstädt wind farm , the largest of its kind in Thuringia, which, together with the Wiegleben wind turbines, comprises over 60 wind turbines. In 2011 there was resistance from the population against a planned expansion. The future expansion of the wind farm is now only to take place in small steps, and its output will also be increased further through 're-powering' (replacement of old with new and more powerful systems).
