Previous model Honda Dax

The CY 50 is a moped from the Japanese manufacturer Honda , which was also sold in Germany from 1977 to 1983 as the successor to the Honda Dax . The uncovered two-wheeler has an air-cooled single-cylinder engine with 50 cm³ displacement , the four-stroke engine has an output of 1.5 kW (2.1 HP). In contrast to the Dax with a horizontal motor, the motor of the CY 50 is installed upright.

The Honda CY 80 was also imported as a larger, but much rarer model . The road version Honda CB 50 and the enduro version XL 50 were also built with comparable engine technology .

particularities

It was advertised as a special feature that “ ... it does not require a fuel-oil mixture, but normal gasoline. This keeps the engines clean right through to the exhaust. Typical of the 4-stroke technology are the rich, round run and the low fuel consumption. And what runs smoothly lasts a long time ... These mokicks have the great technology from Honda. "

Especially for the German sales market with its then road traffic approval regulations (StVZO), the engine was provided with a speed limiter which, together with the spark plug, the preset ignition point, the carburetor and the gear ratio - all in the standard delivered - only reached a maximum speed of around 40 km / h. Detailed solutions adopted from the motorcycle sector, such as tubular frames, tanks, seats, side covers and helmet attachment options, as well as the four-stroke engine with vertical cylinder , overhead camshaft and real gearbox with wet clutch, made it a miniature motorcycle. The designers of the " Frech-Dax " - as the CY 50 was called in the Honda advertising - had developed various improvements for this model that were also incorporated into production, which at that time were still missing in the products of the competition besides the four-stroke technology described above. For example, the five-way adjustable rear suspension struts to adjust the spring preload to the load, a trip meter in the speedometer and a six-liter tank that allowed a range of around 200 kilometers.

Luggage racks at the rear and at the front even allowed a versatile work use, for example when transporting various hobby equipment . Front and rear wheel rims ( rims ) that can be unscrewed allow extensive care, immediate hose repair and easy changing of the casing in a problem-free self-assembly.

Weak points

A weak point of the model are the factory-made rigid mounting tubes for the front and rear indicators, which is why even slight falls can cause significant damage, especially to the front indicators and their mounting (see picture).

The valve seats with valve rings manufactured at that time and the built-in valves require that the engine be driven predominantly or at least occasionally with leaded regular and premium gasoline , which is no longer available at petrol stations . A declaration authorized by the manufacturer that continuous operation without the addition of lead in the fuel will sooner or later definitely not cause any damage to the relevant engine is not known. From a list posted on the Internet by Honda, however, it can be seen that the CY 50 can also be driven with normal unleaded petrol (DIN 51607; at least 91 RON ).

The design-related output of the alternator (swing light generator) with six-voltage electrics was not designed for this mokick to be always driven with the lights switched on, as prescribed after the later amendment of the StVO in the Federal Republic of Germany. Therefore, with this alternator in this driving mode, especially with predominantly short-distance traffic, the optimal charging of the standard accumulator (on-board battery - 6 V, 4 Ah) is no longer guaranteed while driving, which can lead to the fact that after some time the 21- Watt lightbulbs (6 V) will lose their function.

The standard fuel filler cap, which was part of the delivery condition, at least in Germany, was not lockable. In addition, the only signaling device in this country was a bicycle bell.

Cult status

Today the Honda CY 50 has become a sought-after collector's item and has cult status . For a well-preserved CY, the list price of 1,000 euros and more is paid again today.

There is a homepage dedicated to the Honda CY 50, CB 50 and XL 50. Information and downloads are provided with lots of details ; In the linked forum, everyday problems after the long life of the " oldtimer " are discussed and answered; In addition, measures are described to upgrade the old small motorcycles to the latest standards (e.g. safety, electrics and performance).
