The Honda NX 650 Dominator is an all-terrain motorcycle from the Japanese vehicle manufacturer Honda . The Enduro was built from 1988 to 2000 under the factory codes RD 02 and RD 08. The English sales name Dominator [ dɒmɪneɪtəʳ ] means ruler .

technology

drive

It is driven by an air-cooled single-cylinder engine with a capacity of 644 cm³. The four-stroke engine generates a nominal output of 32 kW (44 hp) and a maximum torque of 53 Nm. The cylinder has a bore of 100 mm diameter, the piston has a stroke of 82 mm with a compression ratio of 8.31: 1. The four radially arranged valves of the cylinder are controlled by an overhead chain-driven camshaft . The ignition is carried out by a capacitor discharge ignition (CDI). An electric starter starts the engine. The years 1988 and 1989 also have a kickstarter.

The motorcycle accelerates from 0 to 100 km / h in 6.5 s and reaches a top speed of 153 km / h.

Chassis and drive train

The motorcycle has a closed single-loop frame with double steel beams, a two-armed steel swing arm with a Showa strut at the rear and a Showa telescopic fork with a stroke of 220 mm at the front . The power is transmitted by a five-speed gearbox, the power separation by a multi-disc oil bath clutch and the secondary drive by an O-ring chain . A hydraulically operated disc brake with double-piston floating caliper decelerates on the front wheel and a hydraulically operated disc brake with single-piston floating caliper at the rear, both from Nissin .

Fuel supply

The fuel tank has a volume of 13 liters (until 1992) or 16 liters (from 1992), of which 2.5 liters are in reserve. The average fuel consumption is 5.5 l per 100 km at a speed of 120 km / h. The manufacturer recommends the use of unleaded motor gasoline with a knock resistance of at least 91  octane .

Exhaust system

The exhaust manifolds were made of stainless steel in the first and later years of construction. Two exhaust manifolds each open into a tailpipe of the exhaust system. From 1991, due to stricter exhaust gas regulations, a secondary air system (SLS) was installed, which reduced the output from 45 to 44 hp.

Dimensions and weights

The dry weight is 152 kg and the maximum load is 177 kg. The Enduro has a ground clearance of 255 mm. The tire dimensions are 90 / 90-21 54 S at the front and 120 / 90-17 64 S at the rear.

variants

In addition to the NX 650, there were also the NX 125, NX 250 and NX 500 variants. All variants had a four-stroke engine with one cylinder and four valves, an electric starter and initially also a kick starter. The only difference between the 500 cm³ version and the 650 cm³ version is the smaller displacement. The 250 cm³ version, on the other hand, is an independent model, as its engine, in contrast to the two larger air-cooled engines, is water-cooled. The fairing, frame and design of the 250 series also differ significantly from the 500 and 650 cm³ versions. The Honda NX 125, sometimes with the nickname Transcity, is rarely seen in Germany because it is only available as an import from France, Italy or Brazil.

In the course of production, the Honda motorcycle was repeatedly modified slightly. In 1996 the final assembly of the motorcycle was relocated from Hamamatsu in Japan to Atessa in Italy . As a result, the purchase price for the Honda with the new factory code RD08 was reduced, but quality losses are also said to have been associated with it.

The successor to the NX 650 was the Honda SLR 650 , with the same 650 cm³ single cylinder engine. However, the SLR 650 and its successor, the Honda Vigor, are designed more as a fun bike for pure road use than as an enduro.

Competitive models with comparable chassis geometry were the Yamaha XT 600 and the Suzuki DR 650 .

Reviews

"It's unbelievable how well the enduro behaves as a tourer: The vibrations of the single cylinder are bearable, and the half-shell fairing offers sufficient wind protection for fast stretches of the motorway."

- Thorsten Dentges : motorcycle

“But the elastic, high-torque engine, in conjunction with the extremely easy-to-maneuver chassis, cuts a fine figure both on the road and in moderately difficult terrain. An effective braking system and well-coordinated spring elements complete the solid impression. "

- Jens Rother : bma magazine

“The balance of the all-rounder - whereby the emphasis is on the fact that it can really do everything exceptionally well apart from difficult cross-country passages - naturally also seduces frequent drivers on the journey to their vacation areas to wind down many kilometers on the motorway. Although this is not the domain of single-cylinder engines, the NX engine can also cope with parforce hunts without complaint. "

- Peter Limmert : Motorbike
