Horná Breznica (Hungarian Felsőnyiresd - until 1907 Felsőbreznic or Felsőbrezsnic ) is a municipality in northwestern Slovakia with 504 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019), which belongs to the Okres Púchov , part of the Trenčiansky kraj .

The municipality is located in the northern part of the White Carpathians in the valley of the Zubák brook . The center of the village is at an altitude of 334  m nm and is 13 kilometers from Púchov .

Neighboring municipalities are Zubák in the north, Dohňany in the northeast, Púchov and Streženice in the east, Lednické Rovne and Dolná Breznica in the south and Lednica in the west.

history

Cyril and Method Church in the village

Horná Breznica was first mentioned in writing together with Dolná Breznica in 1388 as Breznycze and belonged to the dominion of the Lednica Castle . In the 15th century it was divided and in 1471 the name Mala Mreznycza appears . In 1598 there were 31 houses here. In 1784 the village had 64 houses, 77 families and 430 inhabitants, in 1828 there were 56 houses and 580 inhabitants who were employed as farmers.

Until 1918 the place in Trenčín County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary and then came to Czechoslovakia or today's Slovakia.

From 1980 to 1990 Horná Breznica was merged with the neighboring village Dolná Breznica to form the municipality of Breznica.

According to the 2011 census, 473 inhabitants lived in Horná Breznica, 456 of them Slovaks and three Czechs . 14 residents did not provide any information on ethnicity .

440 residents confessed to the Roman Catholic Church, five residents to the Mormons, three residents to the Greek Catholic Church and one resident each to the Jehovah's Witnesses, to the Evangelical Church AB and to another denomination. Three residents were non-denominational and 19 residents had no denomination.
