Yichang ( Chinese  宜昌 市 , Pinyin Yíchāng Shì ) is a city in the west of the Chinese province of Hubei with over four million inhabitants. It lies between the upper and middle reaches of the Yangtze River . The Gezhouba dam is nearby .

The average annual temperature in the region is 16-18 ° C.

Yichang has always been a distribution center of materials and a traffic hub in West Hubei and East Sichuan . In the vicinity of the city is the Sanyou Cave , where the famous poets of the Tang Dynasty Bai Juyi , his younger brother Bai Xingjian and Yuan Zhen met and took inspiration from the cave to write one of China's most famous poems.

The Chinese Three Gorges University has existed in the city of Yichang since 2002 , which was created through the merger of the University of Hydraulics and Electrical Engineering, Yichang and the Hubei Three Gorges University. It is the largest general university in Hubei outside the capital, Wuhan, with over 20,400 students.

At the county level, Yichang consists of five urban districts , three counties, two autonomous counties and three independent cities. These are:

  • Xiling District (西陵 区), 90 km², 400,000 inhabitants, seat of the city government;
  • Wujiagang district (伍 家 岗 区), 69 km², 140,000 inhabitants;
  • Dianjun district (点 军区), 546 km², 100,000 inhabitants;
  • Xiaoting District (猇 亭 区), 118 km², 50,000 inhabitants;
  • Yiling District (夷陵 区), 3,424 km², 520,000 inhabitants;
  • Circle Yuan'an (远安县) 1,752 km², 200,000 inhabitants, capital: greater community Mingfeng (鸣凤镇);
  • Circle Xingshan (兴山县), km² 2327, 190,000 inhabitants, capital: greater community Gufu (古夫镇);
  • Zigui district (秭归县), 2,427 km², 390,000 inhabitants, capital: Maoping municipality (茅坪 镇);
  • Changyang Autonomous County of the Tujia (长阳 土家族 自治县), 3,430 km², 410,000 inhabitants, capital: Longzhouping municipality (龙舟 坪镇);
  • Autonomous district of Wufeng of the Tujia (五峰 土家族 自治县), 2,072 km², 210,000 inhabitants, main town: Wufeng municipality (五峰 镇);
