Jakob Gruchmann (born September 23, 1991 in Salzburg ) is an Austrian composer.

Live and act

Gruchmann received his first instrumental lessons at the age of four, first accordion and later horn . In 2002 the first public performance of one of his compositions took place. In 2007 he received first prize in the competition of the Austrian Composers' Association . In 2010 he passed the Matura . He studied at the Mozarteum University (2010–2016), where he received a performance scholarship, and graduated with honors. In addition, he completed masterclasses and seminars in composition with Wolfgang Rihm , José Manuel López López , Georg Friedrich Haas , Helmut Lachenmann , Lucia Ronchetti and Kurt Schwertsik, among others .

In 2013 Gruchmann was composer in residence at the “PalmKlang Festival”, where the world premiere of his composition “ConCertare” took place with the soloist Matthias Schorn . Also in 2013 he received the composition prize of the Concorso Corale Internazionale “Musica Sacra a Roma” and studied with Gerd Kühr in Graz .

In 2014 he worked at the Center for Systematic Musicology at the Karl Franzens University . Shortly afterwards (2014) he became professor for composition and music theory at the Carinthian State Conservatory . In the same year he began to set the lyrics by Georg Trakl together with Rafael Fingerlos . In 2015 he was composer in residence at the 52nd International Choir Competition at Porcia Castle . and in 2016 composer for the cultural mediation project konfrontationen 6 at ORF musikprotokoll in Styrian autumn .

In addition to his professorship in Carinthia, Gruchmann also teaches as a lecturer at the Carinthian University of Education, is a guest lecturer in music theory at the Carinthian Choir Academy and holds numerous master classes. He is also a member of the jury at competitions such as Prima la musica , Artedea Arena and the Salzburg competition singing. In 2017 he worked as a composer and improvisation artist in the film “GrazKunst ist…” by Felix Breisach .

Gruchmann wrote commissioned works for the Bavarian State Exhibition , International Menuhin Music Academy, Austrian Choir Association , Archdiocese of Salzburg , Radio Salzburg , Salzburg State Theater , Admont Abbey and Christoph Sietzen .

By 2019 he wrote around 300 works for a wide variety of ensembles (chamber music, solo concerts, orchestral and wind music, choral works, electronic music). In his compositions he often works with structures from nature. Since Gruchmann is committed to the Adventist faith, a focus of his work is on dealing with spiritual and socially critical issues. He lives and works in Klagenfurt and Salzburg.
