Jakob Zimmerli (born March 8, 1863 in Oftringen , † October 22, 1940 in Basel , legal resident in Oftringen and from November 26, 1924 Lucerne) was a Swiss politician ( FDP ).

biography

Jakob Zimmerli was born on March 8, 1863 in Oftringen as the son of the police officer Jakob Zimmerli and Verena Zimmerli, née Wilhelm. Zimmerli attended school in Zurich, where he made the Matura . He then studied philology (German and Romance studies) at universities in Zurich, Basel, Paris and Göttingen and was awarded a Dr. phil. PhD. For several years (from 1883 to 1886) he worked as a tutor in Paris. Jakob Zimmerli was then a teacher at Wellington College in Shropshire (England) from 1886 to 1888. For five years (from 1889 to 1894) he taught language at a secondary school in Basel. His father-in-law Friedrich Wilhelm Glaser was the owner of the Hotel Beau Rivage in Lucerne. Jakob Zimmerli managed this hotel from 1895 to 1904. He then began studying law and in 1910 was admitted to the bar in Lucerne. Jakob Zimmerli practiced the profession of lawyer until he was elected to the city council.

His political career at the cantonal level was limited to membership in the Lucerne Grand Council (today Cantonal Council ), to which he belonged from 1907 to 1939.

At the municipal level, Zimmerli was elected to the Great City Council (Parliament of the City of Lucerne) in 1903. He was a member of this body until January 20, 1918. Then Jakob Zimmerli was elected to the Lucerne City Council (city government). There he was first head of the school department, then police director. In 1919 he was also elected mayor of Lucerne . On June 30, 1939, he resigned as mayor and city councilor.

Jakob Zimmerli was also politically active at the national level. From 1919 to 1935 he was a member of the National Council.

Jakob Zimmerli was also active in many other areas. He was particularly involved in the areas of tourism and culture (President of the Kurhaus / Kurhausgesellschaft, creator of the Lucerne International Music Festival ). He was also a member of the board of directors of Centralschweizerische Kraftwerke and was president of the SBB regional railway council .

Jakob Zimmerli was married to Betty Glaser. They became parents of a son and a daughter.
