Abraham Stocker (born December 26, 1825 in Büron , † October 6, 1887 in Lucerne ; resident in Lucerne) was a Swiss politician (liberal).

biography

Abraham Stocker was born as the son of the farrier Melchior Stocker and Maria Stocker, née Steiger. After elementary school in Büron, he attended high school in the city of Lucerne. After high school he worked as a printer and bookseller in the R. Jenni bookstore and publishing house. He later took over this company. In 1855 he sold the bookstore to Rudolf Bertschinger (from Lenzburg) and the printing company to CM Härdi (also from Lenzburg). In addition to working in his company, he was also an editor and printer of the liberal newspapers Der Eidgenoss and Der Volksmann .

Abraham Stocker also made a career in the military. In 1848 he was a sub-lieutenant and from 1851 a powder administrator on the Luzern place (for central Switzerland and Ticino). He attained the rank of major in 1854, and in 1866 he became adjutant of the 8th Brigade with the rank of colonel . From 1875 to 1880 he was chief inspector of the infantry .

Politically, he started out in local politics as a member of the City Council of Lucerne. Abraham Stocker was on this body from May 21, 1854 to June 1858 and from 1867 to 1871. From May 31, 1863 until his death in 1887, he was also the Cantonal Councilor of Lucerne (then: Grand Councilor). From June 20, 1858 to June 24, 1866 and from 1871 to 1879, Abraham Stocker was a member of the city council (city government) of Lucerne and also held the office of mayor of the city of Lucerne from January 22, 1865 to June 24, 1866 . At the national level, Abraham Stocker was a liberal councilor of the canton of Lucerne from December 1, 1867 to June 1, 1871 .

Abraham Stocker's commitment to promoting rail transport brought him various positions. First, from 1871, he was a board member of the Gotthard Railway , and from 1873 to 1875 board member of the Bern-Lucerne Railway . From 1880 he was chief auditor of the Gotthard Railway. Other offices were Board of Directors of the Eidgenössische Bank from 1870 to 1874, 1st President of the Lucerne Trade Association and, from 1865, a member of the Pilatus Section of the Swiss Alpine Club (SAC) founded in 1864 , of which he was Vice-President from 1873 to 1875. Abraham Stocker was also a leading member of the Christian Catholic Church of Switzerland in the canton of Lucerne.

On September 27, 1852, Abraham Stocker married Lementia (Clementine) Steiger and had five sons and three daughters with her. His brother Johann was a teacher and politician (local politician and councilor of the canton of Lucerne).
