James Southerland III (born April 28, 1990 in Queens , New York City ) is an American basketball player who played professionally in Europe after studying in his home country and a short career in the NBA . After Southerland was initially active in France and Italy , he then played in the German basketball league for the Mitteldeutscher BC, before moving from the first division relegated to the basketball league in 2016/17 to the previous league competitor s.Oliver Würzburg.

Career

After his school days in Queens, Southerland received a scholarship at Syracuse University in the city of the same name in New York State , where he was active in the Big East Conference of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) from 2009 for the Orange University team . In Southerland's time with the "Orangemen", the team reached the qualification for the prestigious national NCAA finals every time . Except for 2011, when they were defeated in the second final game by the weaker Marquette Golden Eagles , they also always reached the round of 16 Sweet Sixteen . Twice they were classified as “Regional Top Seed” in 2010 and 2012 before the tournament among the four best teams, but were eliminated in the “Regional Final” Elite Eight at the latest . In Southerland's senior year 2013 as a senior, however, you defeated the more highly rated Indiana Hoosiers and the Marquette Golden Eagles and reached the Final Four . In the semi-finals of the final tournament, the Orangeman were finally defeated by the Michigan Wolverines . Southerland had built a reputation for himself as a dangerous distance shooter from behind the three-point line in his senior year in the NCAA at the latest when he set the record for six consecutive hits in one game at the Big East championship tournament and a new record with 17 successful three-point throws in this tournament set up, where he had received after the final defeat against the Louisville Cardinals and an award as a member of the "All-Tournament Team". While his teammates Michael Carter-Williams and a year later Jerami Grant were selected in the entry draft of the highest endowed professional league NBA , Southerland was initially disregarded by NBA clubs in the 2013 NBA draft .

After graduating, Southerland played in the 2013 NBA Summer League for the Philadelphia 76ers , who had already selected his teammate Carter-Williams, and also for the Golden State Warriors , before he was signed by the Charlotte Bobcats in early September 2013. After only one use in the NBA 2013/14 , the Bobcats released Southerland in mid-December 2013, who went to the D-Fenders from Los Angeles a week later in the NBA Development League (D-League) . After the D-Fenders had won the West Division of the D-League, Southerland signed a new contract in the NBA on April 11 with the Pelicans from New Orleans , who at the end of the season had no chance of reaching the NBA play-offs and gave him around nine minutes of playing time per game in three more missions. From September 2014 he played the pre-season for the following season with the Portland Trail Blazers , but was rarely used and released a month later before the start of the season after he had already agreed on a contract with the French champions Cercle Saint-Pierre (CSP) Limoges had agreed. After the team from France had only two wins in ten games of the preliminary round in the top European club competition EuroLeague 2014/15 , including two defeats against the German representative Alba Berlin , they just failed in the Eurocup 2014/15 by progressing to the K. -O. -Round. In the French championship of the LNB Pro A 2014/15 , however, the title was defended after being unbeaten as a main round third in the play-offs for the championship except for one final series game. Southerland, who had only come to Limoges after the start of the season in Europe, showed clear difficulties in adapting to the game in Europe and was initially not used for more than an average of ten minutes per game in the Euroleague and French league. After the turn of the year Southerland finally recorded no more use for Limoges, so that he was French champion at the end of the season without further participation.

After the NBA Summer League 2015 at the Oklahoma City Thunder , Southerland got a new contract with the Italian first division club Vanoli Basket from Cremona for the following season . But here, too, Southerland, whose game shares doubled compared to Limoges, could not completely convince and so it was agreed in January 2016 to end the contract. Then Southerland moved to the German basketball league to the relegation-threatened middle German BC from Weissenfels . At the end of the 2015/16 Basketball Bundesliga , Southerland was barely able to keep up in the league, but Southerland was able to show his talent in Europe for the first time with a double-digit point yield per game and a hit rate of almost 40% from behind the three-point line. After the NBA Summer League 2016 with the Washington Wizards , Southerland returned to Germany when he was signed up for the basketball Bundesliga 2016/17 by the s.Oliver Baskets from Würzburg in mid-September 2016 as a replacement for an injured compatriot .
