James Ward (born February 9, 1987 in London ) is a British tennis player .
life and career
2006–2007: beginnings
His father Jim is a taxi driver and his mother is Tina. He has a sister named Lauren.
Ward began playing tennis at the age of eleven. In 2006 he turned professional. In the next year he was able to reach the semifinals in two future tournaments and took part in qualifying for Wimbledon .
2008: ATP debut
In June 2008 he was able to qualify for an ATP tournament for the first time in London's Queen's Club , but lost in the first round against Marat Safin despite winning the first set. Immediately afterwards, he was able to qualify again for an ATP tournament in Nottingham . But this time too, the first lap was over. In the rest of the year he was able to win two future tournaments and also book smaller successes on the Challenger Tour.
2009: First Challenger title and Grand Slam debut
In May 2009 he was able to win the Challenger tournament in Sarasota from qualification . As in 2008, he was able to qualify again for the Turner in London and was eliminated again in the first round. At the following tournament in Eastbourne he finally won his first victory on the ATP World Tour against Victor Crivoi , whom he beat in two sets . In Wimbledon, thanks to a wildcard, he played in the main draw of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time, but lost in three straight sets against Fernando Verdasco in the first round.
2010–2011: Establishment on the Challenger Tour and first ATP semifinals
2010 was a poor year for Ward. His best results on the Challenger Tour were a quarter-final in Vancouver and a semi-final in Loughborough . With his partner Jamie Baker he was able to win the doubles competition at the Challenger tournament in Savannah .
At the beginning of 2011 he was again qualified for an ATP tournament in Sydney , but was eliminated in two sets against Florian Mayer . In the qualifications for the Grand Slams in Melbourne and Paris , he was eliminated in the first round. At the preparatory tournament for Wimbledon in London's Queen's Club , he celebrated his greatest success so far on the ATP tour, when he made it to the semi-finals and on the way beat Stanislas Wawrinka and Sam Querrey , among others . In August of that year he was able to win his second Challenger title in Vancouver . In doubles, he was able to reach two Challenger Finals in 2011.
