Jan Błoński

Jan Błoński (born January 15, 1931 in Warsaw ; died February 10, 2009 in Kraków ) was a Polish literary critic, literary scholar, translator and essayist.

Life

Jan Błoński spent his childhood in Warsaw, Brześć nad Bugiem and Toruń . During the German occupation of Poland , he lived in Warsaw and Krakow . After the Second World War , he lived in Toruń and graduated from high school there in 1948 . He then studied Polonistics at the Jagiellonian University during the Stalinist era and received his master's degree in 1952 . Błoński wrote literary reviews of contemporary Polish literature at an early age and was one of the actors in the “Krakow School of Criticism” ( Krakowska szkoła krytyki ). He made his debut in the magazine Twórczość in 1949 with the article Poezja Różewicza . From 1950 to 1960 he was editor of the Przekrój magazine and headed the literature section there. He also wrote for Życie Literackie , Nowa Kltura , Dialog and Przegląd Kulturalny and in 1951 became a member of the Union of Polish Writers . Between 1959 and 1962 Błoński was employed at the Literature Institute of the Polish Academy of Sciences . He then was a lecturer at the Chair of Polish Literature at the Sorbonne until 1966 . After returning to Kraków, he worked again at the Literature Institute of the Polish Academy of Sciences from 1966 to 1968. In addition, from 1967 to 1971 and from 1977 to 1981 he was literary director at the “Old Theater” in Krakow. With the work Dramaty Stanisława Witkiewicz he received his doctorate at the Jagiellonian University and habilitated there in 1967 with a thesis on Mikołaj Sęp Szarzyński na początku polskiego baroku . From 1970 he worked there as a university lecturer. Until 1997 he successively headed the Theater Institute (1977–1980), Literature Didactics (1981–84), Polish Studies (1988–91) and the Institute for Contemporary Polish Literature (1995–97) at the university. He was invited as visiting professor from 1974 to 1976 at the University of Clermont-Ferrand , where he also worked from 1984/1985 and 1988/1989, as well as at the University of Paris X in 1980 . He joined the Association of Polish Writers in 1989. In 1993 he became a member of the Literature Committee of the Polish Academy of Sciences. From 1996 to 2001 he was a juror at the Nike Literature Prize .

During the German occupation of Poland, he witnessed the evacuation of the Warsaw ghetto . In 1987 he described his own helplessness and that of Polish society in the face of this event in an article Biedni Polacy patrzą na getto in the weekly newspaper Tygodnik Powszechny , which led to a strong reaction from the Polish public, as the Polish public felt attacked in their self-image.
