King Jeongjong ( Korean 정종 ) (born August 31, 1018 in Kaesŏng , Kingdom of Goryeo , † June 14, 1046 in Kaesŏng, Goryeo) was the 10th king of the Goryeo Empire and the Goryeo Dynasty during his reign from 1034 to 1046 ( 고려 왕조 ) (918-1392).
Life
Jeongjong was the second son of King Hyeonjong ( 현종 ) and his mother was Queen Wonseong ( 원성 ), who came from the Ansan Kim clan. Jeongjong was given the name Wang Hu ( 왕후 ) when he was born .
After the death of his brother King Deokjong ( 덕종 ) in 1034, he succeeded him to the throne at the age of 16. During his twelve-year reign he was married to three queens, Queen Yongshin of the Danju Han Clan ( 용신 ), Queen Yongui of the Danju Han Clan ( 용 의 ) and Queen Yongmok of the Lee Clan ( 용목 ). He maintained relations with two other ladies of the court and had four sons and a daughter who, with the exception of one son, had the status of prince and princess. But none of his sons got the chance to inherit him later on the throne.
Little is known about the reign of King Jeongjong. What is documented, however, is that he built the Cheolli Jangseong ( 천리 장성 ) (translated: "Thousand Li Wall" ), a defensive wall consisting of a stone wall that reached from the Yalu River in the north-west of the country to the east coast of the country Brother King Deokjong ( 덕종 ) had started to build it in 1034, while King Jeongjong's reign ended in 1044. He also had 180 warships full of military goods from the river Yeseonggang ( 예성강 ), now called Ryesonggang ( 례 성강 ) and whose estuary into the Yellow Sea is located northwest of today's Seoul , for border security and defense against the Khitan of the Liao dynasty in the northwest of the Transport country.
Jeongjong died on June 14, 1046. The circumstances of his death are unknown. On June 28, 2016, the government in North Korea announced that they had probably found Seolleung ( 숙릉 ), the tomb of King Jeongjong. The two graves that were discovered are located around 4 km northeast of the Haeseon-ri ( 해선리 ) district of the city of Kaesong-si ( 개성시 ).
