action

Jeshua (Jesus) comes to earth to prepare for the Apocalypse . Before doing this he wants to get to know the people and asks the Archangel Gabriel , who has lived on earth for a long time, to help him. Gabriel plans to initially lead Jeshua to a nursing home. On the way there, they meet Marie, who had let her groom sit in front of the altar the day before.

Already at the first meeting Marie is fascinated by Jeshua. He heals a disabled woman, which Marie does not yet recognize as a miracle. Instead, Marie initially says that Jeshua is a terrorist because he comes from Palestine . Jeshua looks familiar to Marie, except for the changed nose, he suspects that Marie is Maria Magdalena . Marie slowly gets to know Jeshua better, who practices Christian charity in everyday life, for example by sharing his food with a homeless person in a restaurant and washing his feet . Only when Jeshua covers the roof of the church with a bare chest does Marie recognize him by his scars as the Son of God . She runs away in shock and cycles to a lake where she falls asleep in a rowboat. This causes Satan to drift onto the lake and a storm draw in while Marie goes down. Now Jeshua shows himself walking over the water and saving Marie, with which Satan discovered him on earth.

Satan plans to decide the outcome of the upcoming apocalypse for himself and recognizes in Marie a possible weakness of Yeshua. After Marie and Jeshua spend a night at the lake, Satan tries to get them to his side. He offers her to be united with Yeshua forever if she chooses him. Gabriel also lures Satan to betrayal, since he is unhappily in love with Marie's mother.

Ultimately, Jeshua, Marie and Satan meet in a castle and the apocalypse begins. Gabriel names Satan as his master, Marie cannot do without and chooses Satan's offer. Then God intervenes, for whom Marie chooses a human appearance. Marie can convince God over a cup of tea that humanity can still develop and, since God trusts in Marie, she manages to postpone the apocalypse to a later date. God calls Marie by the name Maria, which she corrects again and again. God then tells her not to contradict him. Back at the lake, Marie and Jeshua say goodbye, who takes away the pain of the separation and thanks her for the experience as a loving person.

production

The Berghauser Kapelle in Ehaben served as the play and main
location .

Jesus Loves Me is a production by UFA Cinema and was made in co-production with ZDF between April and June 2011 at locations in the federal states of Bavaria , Baden-Württemberg and North Rhine-Westphalia . Patrick Zorer, Steffie Ackermann, Nico Hofmann and Thomas Peter Friedl acted as producers . The editorial team was Caroline von Senden and Katharina Dufner. The production locations were selected primarily on the basis of financial support from the Filmstiftung NRW , the FilmFernsehFonds Bayern (FFF) and the Filmförderung Baden-Württemberg (MFG).

Pictures of the rural scenes as well as sequences around Gabriel's church were taken near Freiburg in Ehaben at the Berghauser Chapel and in Hugstetten at the Gärtnerhaus in the English Garden as well as in various locations in Baden-Württemberg, while all the shots were filmed in Marie's parents' house in North Rhine-Westphalia. A pedestrian zone in Bergisch Gladbach- Bensberg served as the town center . The seascape was illustrated by two Bavarian lakes, the Walchensee and the Sylvenstein Reservoir - the underwater photos were taken in a sauerkraut tank near Munich Airport .

In addition to the film music by composer Marcel Barsotti , Fitz used the pop music of other performers in Jesus Loves Me . The titles that can be heard in the film include Mika's “Any Other World”, Lena'sStardust ”, “ Nur noch die Welt save ” by Tim Bendzko and Eva Cassidy's cover version of “ Time after Time ”.

Reviews

Sascha Westphal from epd Film found that Fitz “set heaven and hell in motion” in his directorial debut, “in order to drive out the clichés from German commercial cinema”. His adaptation of the novel works "splendidly" and changes "truly virtuoso between the moods". Jesus loves me is “a romantic comedy and melodrama, provincial farce and doomsday scenario, satire and mystery play in one. So you can never be quite sure what will happen in the next moment. Nevertheless, these often abrupt changes never seem forced. Fitz always finds a balance and remains very close to his characters ”.

Florian David Fitz received mixed reviews for his directorial debut.

Filmstarts critic Carsten Baumgardt judged that Fitz “made a convincing directorial debut with the romantic comedy Jesus loves me ”, “which appeals with great performance, charm and wit, but at the same time could have used more narrative freshness and satirical spice”. The film offers "easy-going entertainment that lacks narrative sovereignty towards the end." So Fitz holds back "with satirical exaggeration and lets the plot run without surprises according to well-known comedy patterns. Towards the end, he also deviates from the established narrative style and, following the novel, serves a calculated over-candidate finale, the tone of which may not match the previous one ”.

The editorial staff of the Focus described the film as “redeemer clothes with a lot of gossip and occasional small philosophical jumps that could have been improved”. The script weakens “sometimes a bit, the story is all too predictable and striking. And some of the well-intentioned gags don't really ignite either. What is impressive, however, is the verve star cast that Fitz raised for his debut ”. The most “furious” is the appearance “of the theater actor Nicholas Ofczarek as a stinky devil always swarming around with blowflies”.

Spiegel editor Maren Keller summed up that “the over-constructed story is by far not the most unbelievable thing about this film. Much more puzzling is what the characters find in each other [...] Jesus Loves Me is so uncomfortably shallow - if the film were a pond, we could all cross it and look like Jesus. Fitz is actually a likeable actor. And Safier a man of funny ideas. With Henry Hübchen as Gabriel and Hannelore Elsner as Marie's mother, there are also some of the most reliable German actors. It didn't help anything ”. The comedy is "a film for those for whom no-ear rabbits were too arthouse- like".

The TV Magazine prism was that it "would respond from the story of how the world when Jesus walked among us, a whole lot more" could have done and wrote: "That one in Germany is not the comedy of blasphemous Monty Python has is clear here after a few minutes. Perhaps Florian David Fitz should have concentrated better on his game than directing and adapting David Safier's book of the same name. This debut is characterized by many lengths and you can't help but get the impression that Jessica Schwarz rides her bike through the forest for what feels like half an hour ”.
