Justin Cobbs (born March 16, 1991 in Los Angeles , California ) is an American basketball player who plays on the position of point guard . After studying in his home country, Cobbs has been playing as a professional in Europe since 2014 and, in addition to stints in Latvia and Turkey, he has also played for the two German first division clubs Skyliners Frankfurt and Bayern Munich. While he finished fourth with Frankfurt in the international club competition EuroChallenge 2014/15 , he lost the final in the national Beko BBL Cup 2016 with Bayern . For the 2016/17 season , Cobbs moved to the top French league LNB Pro A on the English Channel to BCM Gravelines .

Career

college

Justin Cobbs attended Bishop Montgomery High School in Torrance and was able to recommend himself as a basketball player to the school team for a scholarship to the University of Minnesota . There he played from 2009 as a freshman for the college team Golden Gophers in the Big Ten Conference of the NCAA . Here, however, he was dissatisfied with his game shares. After the opening defeat in the national NCAA finals tournament against the Musketeers of Xavier University (Cincinnati) , in which the later Bundesliga players Jamel McLean and Kenny Frease were active, Cobbs moved back to his Californian home to the University of California, Berkeley , in 2010. which, however, is on San Francisco Bay . According to the regulations of the NCAA Cobbs had to suspend after the university change of championship games before he was active for the university team Golden Bears in the Pacific-12 Conference (Pac-12).

Under coach Mike Montgomery , who had previously led the Golden Bears to the best main round balance of the Conference for the first time in 50 years, it was enough for Cobbs and the team to make two NCAA finals. In 2012 they lost in the First Four to the Bulls of the University of South Florida , while the team had to admit defeat to the eventual Final Four participant Syracuse Orangemen a year later after a surprising opening win against the UNLV Runnin 'Rebels . In Cobbs' last NCAA season, the Golden Bears narrowly missed participation in the national NCAA finals, although Cobbs was selected as a "senior" individually among the top ten Pac-12 players, and played in the postseason instead in the National Invitation Tournament 2014. Here the Golden Bears just failed to make it into the Final Four and lost in the quarterfinals against the Mustangs of Southern Methodist University , who later lost the final against Cobbs' former team Minnesota Golden Gophers. Cobbs himself had individually achieved almost 16 points and 6 assists in his final year at college in an average of 34 minutes per game , which were enough for his award in the Pac-12.

Europe

After the end of his studies, Cobbs tried to recommend himself through training camps in so-called "workouts" for clubs in the highest-endowed professional league NBA . In addition to the Golden State Warriors from the Bay Area , in which Cobbs had studied for four years, he played in the NBA Summer League for the Memphis Grizzlies . However, he was unable to be selected by a club in the 2014 NBA Draft or a further commitment to the season after the Summer League, after he was finally deleted from the Charlotte Hornets' squad a week before the start of the NBA season together with Brian Qvale . Cobbs moved to Europe, where the season had already started, and played in Latvia for runner-up BK VEF Rīga after playing for the regular Euroleague participant Laboral Kutxa in Spain in the pre-season phase in August . The team of the Latvian club started weak, especially in the international club competitions Eurocup 2014/15 and VTB United League 2014/15 . As a rookie, Cobbs did not initially convince the professionals and so this contract in Riga was terminated after just four weeks.

Instead, Cobbs signed a contract at the beginning of December 2014 with the injury-ridden German first division club Fraport Skyliners from Frankfurt am Main , where he soon knew how to convince. In the third continental European club competition EuroChallenge 2014/15 , the team reached the Final Four tournament, in which they lost in the semifinals to the eventual title winner JSF Nanterre . In the national championship it was enough for the Frankfurter, who had started weakly without Cobbs, to sixth place and the first play-off entry since 2011. In the final round of the German championship, the team was ultimately defeated by defending champions Bayern Munich in four after a strong fight Play. After the 2015 Summer League again with the Charlotte Hornets, Cobbs moved to the Türkiye Basketbol Ligi for Büyükşehir Belediyespor from Istanbul at the start of the European season . However, the previous year's climber could not improve and remained in the lower third of the table at the start of the season.

After Bayern Munich loaned Vasilije Micić to KK Roter Stern Belgrade at the end of 2015 , the club signed up Cobbs, who then moved back to the German basketball league . After Bayern were eliminated from the Euroleague 2015/16 in the preliminary round , it was enough in the second round of the Eurocup 2015/16 to advance against national rivals Alba Berlin . A week earlier, however, as the host in the final of the Beko BBL-Pokal 2016, they were only inferior to this team in the closing seconds after defeating the German champions Brose Baskets in the semifinals . In the quarter-finals of the Eurocup, the Bavarians were finally subject to the eventual title winner of the competition and another Istanbul club Galatasaray . In the national championship, Bayern reached fourth in the main round of the play-off semi-final series, in which the previous runner-up was very clearly defeated by defending champion Brose Baskets in three games in a new edition of the previous year's final series.

After Bayern had missed a title win in the past season, Cobbs changed clubs again and signed a contract for the LNB Pro A 2016/17 with the French first division club BCM Gravelines from Dunkirk on the English Channel .
