For the first time in 1221 an Albertus de Canneworfin and in 1245 Albert de Kannewerfen were mentioned in a document. As early as 1350, the Kannawurfer left their headquarters and sold it.

Later they sit on Albersroda , Bendeleben , Buttstädt , Beuna , Freyburg , Gehofen , Gleina (before 1398), Grussnitz , Heiligenkreuz , Kelbra , Klein Liebenau , Merseburg , Müelte , Niederbeuna (until 1748), Pretzschendorf , Peina , Pfannengüter zu Halle / Saale , Schnellroda , Steigra , Trebra , Weischütz (before 1383), at short notice they also had goods in castle divisions and church divisions .

They are related to those of Scheidingen , von Rockhausen , von Haldeck , and von Uichteritz, among others .

In 1497 Rulf von Cannaworfin was referred to as a Bamberg feudal bearer.

The family had their hereditary funeral in the church of Schnellroda for 200 years. There is an epitaph of Hans von Kannewurf († 1540). 1627 Hans Caspar von Kannewurf sold the estate in Gleina. The epitaph Heinrich Burkhart von Kannewurf on Albersroda and Gleina is located in the entrance hall of Naumburg Cathedral . In the 18th century the family came to East Prussia , Lyck district , where Rudolf von Kannewurf was master of Baitkowen in 1806 (1938 to 1945: Baitenberg). Horst von Kannewurf can still be found there in 1932 († 1939).

Noble or middle-class descendants of the family also settled in Denmark, Norway, the USA and the Netherlands. A particular frequency of the name Kannewurf, with regard to the number of inhabitants, is recorded in the place Gatersleben in Saxony-Anhalt . From this circle, the name Kannewurf can even be spread in the Stuttgart area and currently even in the South American area, especially Brazil.
