history
The canton was created in 1801 from the amalgamation of communes that until then belonged to the cantons of Ambrières (today Ambrières-les-Vallées), Chantrigné and Fraimbault-sur-Pisse (today Saint-Fraimbault-sur-Pisse). In 1831 the municipality of Saint-Fraimbault-sur-Pisse moved to the Orne department. In its current composition, the canton has only existed since 1972, since the municipality of La Haie-Traversaine was part of the canton of Mayenne-Ouest until that year.
