origin

Karl came from the noble family von Willisen, who originally lived in the Wetterau . He was the son of the Prussian Lieutenant General Karl von Willisen (1788–1873), who - like his younger brothers Wilhelm and Friedrich Adolf von Willisen - received Prussian approval on April 29, 1866 in Berlin to use the title of baron for himself and his descendants. His mother was Albertine. Countess Dyhrn , born von Köller from the Cantreck family (1787–1825), who was married to Count Wilhelm Karl von Dyhrn-Schönau in her first marriage .

Military career

He received his first military training in the Berlin Cadet Corps . On August 5, 1837 he joined the 7th Cuirassier Regiment as a porter ensign , where he was promoted to second lieutenant on March 6, 1838 . From 1844 to 1846 he was posted to the General War School for further training . During the German March Revolution of 1848 he was involved in the street fighting in Berlin. In 1849 he became an adjutant of the 14th Cavalry Brigade , and in 1852 a first lieutenant with a transfer to the topographical department in the General Staff . From 1855 he was a captain , a year later he was transferred to the General Staff of the VIII Army Corps , and in 1857 again to the General Staff.

In 1858 he became captain and squadron chief , in 1859 general staff officer in the 3rd Cavalry Division , and in the same year major in the general staff. In 1860 he was transferred to the General Staff of the Guard Cavalry Division . During the war against Denmark , Willisen was assigned to the 13th Infantry Division , took part in the conquest of Alsen on June 29, 1864 and was awarded the Order of the Red Eagle, IV class with swords.

As a lieutenant colonel, he was commissioned on January 4, 1866, initially with the leadership of the Neumärk Dragoon Regiment No. 3 and on April 3 , Willisen was appointed regiment commander. He led this association in the same year during the war against Austria in the battles near Münchengrätz and Königgrätz and the battle near Blumenau . After the peace agreement , Willisen was given the command of the Royal House Order of Hohenzollern with Swords and on December 31, 1866 was promoted to colonel .

In the war against France he led his regiment in the 8th Infantry Division in the battle of Gravelotte and the siege of Metz . On November 23, 1870, Willisen was commanded to lead the Baden cavalry brigade and took part in the battle at Nuits . Awarded with both classes of the Iron Cross and the Knight's Cross of the Military Karl Friedrich Order of Merit , Willisens was transferred to the army officers at the beginning of April 1871 while leaving his command in Baden . As a result of the military convention with Prussia, the Baden cavalry brigade was formed into the 28th Cavalry Brigade in Karlsruhe and Willisen was appointed commander of the large association in June 1871 . In this position he rose to major general in mid-August 1871, and in the spring of the following year he was a member of a commission which, based on the experience of the last war, developed proposals to change the regulations for the cavalry . On December 7, 1875, initially charged with commanding the 28th division , Willisen was appointed commander of this division on November 21, 1876, with promotion to lieutenant general . In recognition of his many years of service, Kaiser Wilhelm I awarded him the Order of the Red Eagle 1st class with oak leaves and swords on the ring on the occasion of the festival in January 1882. On November 23, 1882 he was appointed Governor of Berlin and in this position Willisen advanced to General of the Cavalry on September 20, 1884.

He died in Berlin and was buried on July 28, 1886 in the Invalidenfriedhof .
