Katharina Yvonne Bauer (born June 12, 1990 in Wiesbaden , Hessen ) is a German athlete who specializes in the pole vault .

career path

Bauer successfully studied international management as part of the dual career and received a grade of 1.3 for her bachelor thesis.

Athletic career

Katharina Bauer was initially an artistic gymnast , but saw no future in this sport for herself. She had often participated in German six competitions (three disciplines of apparatus gymnastics and three athletic disciplines) and finally only practiced athletics.

In 2012, Bauer was the best German junior of the year (U23) with a height of 4.42 m.

Bauer contributed to the overall victory at the 2014 European Team Championship in Braunschweig with third place in the pole vault (4.40 m).

In 2015 Bauer was indoor runner-up with 4.50 m , but remained at the European Indoor Championships in Prague without a valid attempt. At the German Championships she took 4th place.

In 2016 she gave up the indoor season because of stress edema in her right foot. As a young athlete, Bauer had a good chance of participating in the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro . By April 2016, she had contested nine competitions over 4.50 m, five of them in 2015. At the beginning of June, however, she injured her hand so badly that she had to end the season.

In 2017, Bauer was unable to contest an indoor season because of this serious hand injury. At the German Championships she finished 9th. She only set her annual best at the end of August with 4.42 m.

At the beginning of 2018, at the new indoor meeting in Dortmund on January 21st, Bauer managed to jump 4.52 m again over 4.50 m, her best result since August 2015. On February 17, 2018, Bauer jumped again with the Germans in Dortmund Indoor championships with 4.51 m again over 4.50 m and secured the championship title with this performance. She finished the German Championships without a valid attempt. She had been put in a defibrillator in April , as she announced publicly later that year.

In 2019, Bauer was German indoor runner-up with 4.55 m and came 14th at the European Indoor Championships in Glasgow with 4.40 m. At the end of the indoor season, she was diagnosed with a severe herniated disc that affected her for many months. The German Championships ended farmer with 4.11 m in 6th place and at the World Championships in Doha she remained without a valid attempt.

In 2020, Bauer canceled the indoor season in order not to take a risk by entering the competition season too early, especially since the most important summer of her life is ahead of her with a view to the Olympic Games in Tokyo .

Bauer is part of the perspective squad of the German Athletics Association (DLV) .

Club affiliations

Bauer has started for TSV Bayer 04 Leverkusen since January 1, 2014 , previously she was at USC Mainz .
