The two drug dealers Smoke and Oil Dresden raid a shop with great use of weapons; the kitten Keanu flees. The little cat wanders all over Los Angeles and ends up at the door of Rell, who has just been abandoned by his girlfriend. Rell suffers from the separation, but he finds comfort in the cat. When Keanu suddenly disappears two weeks later after a burglary, Rell and his cousin Clarence, whose wife and daughter are away for the weekend, set out to find the missing cat. After the two find out that the cat belongs to a drug lord, the two set out to save the cat with all their might.

In October 2014 it was announced that the two of Key & Peele known Jordan Peele and Keegan-Michael Key to play in a film directed by Peter Atencio. Filming began on June 1, 2015 in and ended on July 10. The film was shot in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Keegan-Michael Key is allergic to cats, so he had to take medication while filming in order to interact with the cats.
The film title is Keanu, which is the name of the cat in the film. In the original version, the cat is voiced by Keanu Reeves , who has the same name.

The film was received mostly mixed to positive. On Rotten Tomatoes , the film holds an approval rating of 78%, based on 152 reviews, with an average rating of 6.4 out of 10. The film service judges: "The qualities of the mostly African American and Latino gangster comedy are on a dialogical level while it the plot lacks rigor. The forced brutality makes the film a rather mixed affair. "
