License plate (Iraq)
The current Iraqi license plates were introduced in 2008. The signs are 335 × 155 mm in size, usually have black lettering on a white background and are divided into three parts. On the left is the country name in English (IRAQ). The background color of this field differs depending on the vehicle type. In the case of private vehicles, the background is white, in the case of rental cars or vehicles for (public) passenger transport it is red. On the right in the lower field is the name of the governorate and the type of vehicle in Arabic . The actual combination consisting of a letter and five digits appears in the top right field. It is represented in both Arabic characters and Latin .
The Kurdistan Autonomous Region uses signs that were introduced for all of Iraq in 1988. They are also divided into three parts and only show Arabic characters. In the lower line is the name of the governorate on the left and the country name ( Arabic العراق, DMG al-ʿIrāq ). The top line shows a maximum of six digits. Here, too, different background colors are used depending on how the vehicle is used. In the rest of Iraq, this layout was modified in 2001. The license plates became longer and the indication of the governorate and country name now appeared one above the other on the left.
