Virtus Pallacanestro Bologna ( Virtus Bologna for short ) is one of the most famous Italian basketball clubs from Bologna . He plays in the Lega Basket Serie A and played his home games at times in the PalaMalaguti ( called Unipol Arena since 2011 ), which is not in Bologna itself, but in neighboring Casalecchio di Reno . There is an intense rivalry with Fortitudo Bologna , which peaked around the turn of the millennium when both clubs were among the best in Europe.

Virtus was founded in 1879 as a gymnastics club. The basketball department was founded in 1920. Virtus Bologna won the Italian championship 14 times and the Italian cup eight times . His most successful season was 2000/2001, when Virtus won the Euroleague in addition to the Italian championship and the cup. After financial problems, Virtus had to relegate in 2003, but returned to Lega A two years later with the help of the license from the second division club Progresso Castelmaggiore .
The first sporting relegation from Serie A took place in the 2015/16 season, after only reaching 16th and last place in the regular season.In the 2016/17 season of the A2 Est series , after the regular season they finished 2nd.
