action

Insurance agent Sperling plays with his neighbor, the doctor Dr. Kieselbach and the writer Wendland, Skat. He is furious about Ms. Kieselbach's lack of gaming experience and thus causes the first upset. He takes out his bad mood on the maid Berta and the woman finally falls and is taken care of by Dr. Kieselbach is on sick leave. This is one more reason for Sperling to tinker with the long-time domestic worker, so that Sperling's wife Camilla and Kieselbach's wife Anna decide to teach him an apprenticeship: Berta should work for the Kieselbachs for a week and so Sperling will learn to appreciate her work better. But when Sperling insults Berta over the garden fence, she actually quits and becomes the new housemaid of the Kieselbach family. The neighborly peace is now over. The main victim is Sperling's daughter Inge, who loves Kieselbach's son Christian. Sperling now prohibits his daughter from having a relationship. A short time later the new housemaid Rita arrives. She turns out to be a naive but attractive person.

On an excursion, Sperling lets his wife drive the car, as she should get a little practice before her upcoming driving test. In one village, Camilla is so irritated by a herd of oxen that she drives into a market stall. Since both of them drink some alcohol when they are shocked, they are not only prosecuted by the approaching policeman for driving without a license, but also for drinking and driving. Both have to go to the district court prison in Heidenburg for three months. In front of the Kieselbachs and also the housemaid Rita, they pretend to go to the cure. Only neighbor Wendland knows that both of them have to go to jail. During this time, he takes care of forwarding the mail and checks the Sperlings house every now and then. When it thunderstorm one night, Rita is so afraid that Wendland spends the night at her side in Sperling's house. The next morning he leaves the house and is promptly seen by the milkwoman. Now rumors in the village that Wendland and Rita have a relationship.

One day, Sperling's boss announced that he was about to be promoted. Wendland alerts Sperling and they both swap roles for a day. While Wendland is representing Sperling in prison, Sperling sleeps in his own bed, in which he also finds Rita the next day, who has gone to bed as usual. Sperling's boss believes Rita is Sperling's wife and is delighted.

At some point the three months in prison will be over. Since prison guard Pfeffer was an extremely indulgent and kind person, the sparrows find it difficult to say goodbye. They promise that they will visit Pfeffer privately, especially since his white mice are expecting offspring. As soon as they are back in their house, the neighborhood dispute continues. Inge and Christian are still a couple and the Sperlings are now falling out with Wendland too: Sperling had hit a car on his excursion while in custody and committed a runaway. He was reported and again Wendland stands in for him as a perpetrator, as Sperling was officially in prison. Wendland's courage turns out to be lucky because the car that was hit belonged to wanted criminals who could be caught. Wendland receives a wage of 3,000 marks and Sperling reacts indignantly because it is actually his money. In addition, Wendland becomes a non-person because Rita is pregnant - according to von Wendland's village gossip - and some bottles are missing in Sperling's wine cellar, although only Wendland had the key to the cellar during his imprisonment. When the cheeky neighbors place two heads of cabbage in Sperling's swimming pool and Sperling furiously calls them to Dr. Kieselbach throws, all three neighbors indicate each other. It comes to the arbitration procedure that teacher Schiller holds in his school. After a few allegations and arguments, the postman who happened to be there turns out to be the father of Rita's child. He was often secretly with her and also drank the wine. Rita had borrowed the cellar key briefly from Wendland once. A great reconciliation takes place and Sperling also accepts Inge and Christian's relationship. In the end, however, the Sperlings' secret comes to light when prison guard Pfeffer visits his "good friends" at school. For Camilla, he also has a few baby mice with him as a present and in the end he plunges everything into chaos.
