The Kisstadion ( German  Small Stadium ) is an ice rink in the Hungarian capital Budapest . It is one of the last regularly used outdoor ice hockey arenas in the world. The competition venue is the home stadium of MAC Budapest and has an official audience capacity of 15,000. It is in the immediate vicinity of the Puskás Aréna football stadium .

history

Construction began in August 1959. The work was supported by soldiers and equipment from the Hungarian armed forces . The opening took place two years later with an international ice hockey match between Hungary and Romania (2: 5). The ice rink now offers space for 15,000 visitors in the stands. The Kisstadion has 16,800 seats for the audience for concerts. In addition to ice hockey, the ice rink is used for figure skating and short track events. In the summer months, the open-air arena serves as a location for various sports, apart from football, and cultural events such as Holiday on Ice in August 1967, various boxing matches or games by the Harlem Globetrotters basketball show troupe .

In the 1960s, the 1962 World Weightlifting Championships , the 1963 European Figure Skating Championships and the 1964 European Women's Basketball Championships stopped at the stadium. The European figure skating championship in the Kisstadion was the last one in the open air. She was hampered by heavy snowfall.

In 1988, the stadium received new changing rooms, a new floodlight system that also enabled television broadcasts and a press stand for radio and television commentators.
