history
- 1902 - The first vehicles in Liechtenstein receive license plates that correspond to the Austrian license plates of the neighboring state of Vorarlberg . The signs consist of the letter W and a three-digit number in black letters on a white background, e.g. B.
W 123
. - 1918 - The customs treaty with Austria is dissolved and a separate license plate system is introduced. The signs are black with white writing and consist of the letter L for Liechtenstein and a serial number, e.g. B. L 12 .
- 1920 - The system still valid today with the letters FL , the national coat of arms and a serial number is introduced.
- 1957 - The coat of arms with the national colors is replaced by the yellow-red coat of arms of the Princely House.
- 1972 - The font size and the format of the signs are adjusted to the Swiss license plates.
Sign colors and numbering system
Black license plates are available for all vehicles for the transport of goods and people, i. H. For cars, trucks, trailers, buses, commercial tractors, motorcycles, three-wheeled motor vehicles and single-axle motor vehicles. License plates with a green base color are for agricultural vehicles, blue license plates for work vehicles, brown plates for exceptional vehicles and yellow plates for small motorcycles.
The license plates have numbers from 21 or from 300 for trailers, or from 2000 for cars and trucks. The numbers from 1 to 20 are reserved for police vehicles and vehicles belonging to the princely family.
The numbers are assigned one after the other. Returned numbers are issued again after one year. Returned signs with low numbers (4-digit motor vehicle signs, 2-digit motorcycle signs) and signs with conspicuous number combinations are only available from the respective sign auction. Auctions take place every 1 to 2 years.
The license plates are assigned to the owner, not the vehicle. When changing vehicles, the same signs can be attached to the new vehicle. If the previous owner no longer registers a new vehicle, he must return the license plates. The owner can deposit or reserve the license plates for a fee. In the event of cancellation, the license plates will be destroyed. Stolen or lost signs are blocked for 15 years and posted in the search system.
Due to the small size of the country (approx. 38,800 inhabitants), only around 2,000 vehicles are registered each year. On June 30, 2019, a total of 40,649 motor vehicles and 4,140 trailers were registered in Liechtenstein.
The Principality of Liechtenstein is the only European country that generally issues standard black license plates. A change is not planned and also not desired, because the Liechtensteiners like their black license plates. In other European countries, black license plates are only given to special vehicle groups (e.g. historic vehicles or army vehicles) or as an option to yellow license plates (e.g. Guernsey, Alderney ).
