Erich Weinert Medal
The Erich Weinert Medal was awarded by the Free German Youth (FDJ) in the GDR ; its Central Council donated it as the “ Art Prize of the FDJ” for exemplary artistic design of the life of young people. Up to 12 prizes could be awarded to individual young artists and artist collectives per year .
There are contradicting information about the foundation date. While Erwin Geschonneck's first award with the Erich Weinert Medal is dated in 1954, other sources mention that it was first awarded on December 19, 1957. The awards then took place annually until 1989 on March 7, the day the FDJ was founded, to young and old people Up-and-coming artists.
The gilded medal with a diameter of 26 mm shows the right-looking portrait of Erich Weinert on its obverse and the inscription KUNSTPREIS DER FREIEN DEUTSCHEN JUGEND on the reverse . The medal was worn on the upper left chest on a rectangular clasp covered with blue.
