Kurt Schrader (born October 19, 1951 in Bridgeport , Connecticut ) is an American politician of the Democratic Party . He has represented the state of Oregon in the US House of Representatives since 2009 .

Kurt Schrader received his bachelor's degree from Cornell University in Ithaca in 1973 . It was there that he met his future wife Martha , whom he married in 1975. In 1977 he passed the exams as a veterinarian at the University of Illinois ; the following year the family moved to Oregon, where Kurt Schrader opened a practice in Oregon City .

After 16 years as a member of the planning committee in the city of Canby , Schrader ran for a seat in the Oregon House of Representatives in 1994 and lost to Republican Jerry Grisham by only 38 votes . Two years later he ran again and prevailed against Paul Kraxburger. In 1998 and 2000 he was confirmed in office. In 2002 he succeeded the resigned Verne Duncan as State Senator ; his wife ran for his successor in the House of Representatives, but was defeated by Republican Wayne Scott .

In 2008, Schrader was finally nominated by his party to replace outgoing Congressman Darlene Hooley . He won 54 percent of the vote against Republican Mike Erickson, with a majority in all seven counties in his constituency. On January 3, 2009, he began his work as a Member of Parliament in Washington ; his successor in the Oregon Senate was his wife Martha, from whom he divorced in 2011. As he was re-elected in all subsequent elections, including the one in 2016, he can continue to exercise his mandate today. His latest legislative term runs until January 3, 2019. He is part of the moderately conservative Blue Dog Coalition .
