The Royal Library in Stockholm ( Swedish Kungliga biblioteket ) is Sweden's national library . It has the task of collecting and storing all sound documents, pictures and print productions published in Sweden. It is organized as an administrative authority and is one of the largest libraries on earth .
The library's collections can be used by anyone, but it is primarily intended for students and researchers. Objects that are part of the Swedish collection cannot be borrowed home, but books and other writings can be studied in the library's reading rooms.
The Swedish collection
The library's Swedish collection comprises almost 20 million copies. In addition to books, it contains posters, pictures, manuscripts and advertisements, among other things. The audiovisual collection consists of more than 7 million hours of recorded material.
The library's holdings also include personal archives, for example those of Astrid Lindgren , August Strindberg or Dag Hammarskjöld .
The deposit copies
According to the current legal deposit law, all editors of printed material must send a so-called deposit copy of their printed matter distributed in Sweden to the national library and to six other academic libraries. The music, film, television and radio producers must submit copies to the library in the same way. In certain cases, however, only parts of the shipments need to be delivered.
The law stems from the Chancellery Ordinance of 1661, which required all book printers in the country to send two copies of each font they printed to the royal chancellery. One copy of these was passed on to the Imperial Archives (Riksarkivet) and the other to the Kungliga biblioteket. However, this regulation was for surveillance and possible censorship rather than library purposes; H. Preserving documents for posterity.
Librarian collaboration
As an authority, the Kungliga biblioteket has national responsibility for the coordination and development of information provision in the field of higher education and research. One of the tasks of the Kungliga biblioteket is the central agreement of collective licensing agreements to facilitate access to the various databases.
The building
The library building is located in Humlegården Park in the Östermalm district in central Stockholm .
