The constituency of Melk (constituency 11) is a constituency in Lower Austria that includes the political district of Melk . In the state elections in 2013 , the Austrian People's Party (ÖVP) emerged as the strongest party with 51.8%, whereby the ÖVP was also the only one of the candidate parties to win one of the three basic mandates in the constituency.

history

Lower Austria was divided into four electoral districts until 1992, with the Melk district partly belonging to the state electoral districts of Viertel above Manhartsberg and Viertel above Wienerwald . With the state election regulations in 1992, the number of constituencies was increased to 21 and the Melk district was raised to its own constituency.

Since the creation of the constituency, the Austrian People's Party (ÖVP) has achieved a relative majority in every state election in the Melk constituency, and in four out of five cases also an absolute majority. The result of the ÖVP fluctuated between 49.1 and 55.6%. The ÖVP achieved its best result so far in the 2003 state elections with 55.6%. In the last state election in 2013, the ÖVP achieved 51.8%. The ÖVP was able to achieve a basic mandate in every state election in the Melk constituency.

The Social Democratic Party of Lower Austria (SPÖ) took second place in every state election in the constituency, and between 1993 and 2003 it always achieved a basic mandate. In 2003 the SPÖ achieved its best result to date with 33.1%, after which the SPÖ slipped in 2008 and 2013 with losses of 7% and 3% to only 22.6%. Nevertheless, the SPÖ was slightly above the Lower Austrian provincial result in 2013. However, the SPÖ has not been able to win a basic mandate due to the loss of votes since 2008.

The Freedom Party of Austria (FPÖ) has so far been able to take third place in four of the five elections in the Melk constituency, and in 1998 it achieved its best result to date with 15.9%. As a result, however, in the course of the Peter Rosenstingl affair, it fell to 4.8% and in 2003 ended up in fourth place behind the Greens. After the FPÖ was able to increase again to 10.8% in 2008, it fell back again in 2013 with 9.3%, but was able to defend third place just ahead of the Stronach team.

The Greens - The Green Alternative were able to increase slowly but successively from 2.1 to 6.3% between 1993 and 2013, whereby in 2003 they benefited from the weakness of the FPÖ and were able to advance to third place in this election. In 2013, however, the Greens fell back to fifth place when the Stronach team (FRANK and TS) competed. The Stronach team, on the other hand, was able to achieve 8.1% of the votes right away when it ran for the first time, which made it fourth among the candidate parties in 2013.
