In the state elections in Saxony-Anhalt in 2016 , 40,047 residents were eligible to vote; the turnout was 55.9%. Hardy Güssau won the direct mandate for the CDU . The Stendal constituency differed from many other constituencies in that none of the AfD candidates sought first votes. Thus the constituency candidates were able to achieve relatively high first-vote results compared to other constituencies in the absence of an AfD candidate. With the second votes, however, the usual picture emerged, the AfD was the second strongest party.
