The Lechweg follows the course of the Lech river and leads from its source in Vorarlberg via the Lechtal-Reutte nature park region to the Allgäu in the Bavarian administrative district of Swabia . The trail was opened on June 15, 2012. The Lechweg is the first cross-border long-distance hiking trail that is certified according to the common quality criteria of the European Hiking Association (ERA). Since it opened in 2012, it has been named “Leading Quality Trails - Best of Europe”.

The Lechweg begins at the Formarinsee in Vorarlberg and initially leads along the Formarinbach until it merges with the Spullerbach to the Lech. From there the Lechweg leads via Lech am Arlberg, Warth , Lechleiten , Steeg and Holzgau to the Höhenbachtal Gorge. Via Elbigenalp , the birthplace of the “Geierwally” , Häselgehr and past the Doser waterfall into the area between Elmen and Martinau, the Lechweg follows the Lech to Stanzach . From there it goes through the Pflacher Au over the border to Germany in the direction of Alpsee , from where hikers have a good view of the castles of Hohenschwangau and Neuschwanstein . The route continues over the Kalvarienberg to the Lechfall in Füssen, the end point of the Lechweg.

The Lechweg can be walked in six to eight stages. It is divided into a total of 15 sections. It is possible to replace individual sections with canyoning or rafting on the Lech. The Lechweg is also suitable for less experienced hikers and for hikes with children. It starts at around 1,800 meters above sea level and ends at around 800 meters above sea level.

Most of the Lechweg can be walked from May to October, but the first two stages between Formarinsee and Warth only start from the start of the season in mid-June. Until then, there will still be some remaining snow, and the accommodations in Lech and Warth will not open until the start of the season and the hiking bus, which takes hikers to Lake Formarin, will also only run from this point on.
