Preliminary round
August 23, 1946, 5:30 p.m.
The preliminary round was held in two runs. The first three athletes per run - highlighted in light blue - qualified for the semi-finals.
Why the preliminary division was not made with ten participants with five runners per race, is incomprehensible. Instead, six athletes ran in the first heat and four in the second. A possible explanation is perhaps in short-term cancellations, which are not named.
