The village of Menningen is a suburb of the city of Meßkirch in the Baden-Württemberg district of Sigmaringen in Germany .

geography

Geographical location

Menningen is located around four kilometers east of the city center at around 600 meters above sea level in the Ablach valley . The Ablach separates the originally two villages. The larger town of Menningen with the St. Johannes Church, the cemetery and the former school (today the parish hall) is on the left of the Ablach, Leitishofen on the right of the Ablach. In Menningen the Talbach flowing through the “Hofstatt” flows into the Ablach. The district area covers around 916 hectares (as of December 31, 2010).

Community structure

The neighboring hamlet of Leitishofen , formerly Leutishofen (1564–1567), Liutinshoven (1265), Liutishoven , Lutishoven and Luthenshoven (1271) belongs to Menningen .

history

The timing of the first settlements is not clear. The settlement is likely around the years 700 to 400 BC. When the Celts advanced into what is now southern Germany. Burial mounds in Leitishofen, which date from the Hallstatt period, are the first traces of the early period. Menningen is located in the most favorable place in terms of settlement topography in the Ablachtal and is believed to have originated as a settlement of the Alemannic conquest around 300 AD. This is supported by the fact that all places whose names end in -ingen (the old word for “relatives” is “Ingen”) go back to settlements of Alemanni. Later expansion settlements from the 8th to 10th centuries are the - hausen -, - hofen -, - stetten names, including Leitishofen.

Whether Leitishofen is to be equated with “ Leidighofen ” ( Leidigkofen , Leidinehoven , Ledinehouin , Lethdenchoven or Lediuchoufn ) is not yet proven .

Menningen was first mentioned in the old Salem Cistercian document book in 1175. We are talking about two Germanic knights Gernot and Berthold von Menningen. A knight from Leitishofen is mentioned in 1241 , who was present as a witness to a property purchase. In 1348 Menningen (castle and village) and Leitishofen were sold to knight Berthold von Rohrdorf and in 1354 to Werner von Zimmer . The Lords of Zimmer had suzerainty over the double village of Menningen-Leitishofen. After the family of the Zimmer died out and Johanna Eleonora von Zimmer married Count Wartislaus von Fürstenberg , everything passed to the Fürstenbergers.

In the 14th century, the Wald monastery had possessions on the Leitishofer district.

In the meantime, the rule of the Gremlich had a great influence and special significance. The Gremlich were one of the four bourgeois patrician families of the Holy Roman Empire of the German nation . The Gremlichs are mentioned for the first time in 1216 in Pfullendorf , where they held an official post until 1587. The Imperial Knights of Gremlich have been established as local lords of Menningen and Leitishofen since 1391. As fiefs, they were subordinate to the Lords of Zimmer in Meßkirch and, after their extinction in 1594, to the rule of Fürstenberg.

The seat of the Gremlich was a moated castle standing between Menningen and Leitishofen , the " Moated Castle Menningen ", today's rectory of Menningen. The relationship between Gremlich and the rooms was friendly and they often stayed as guests in the castle. Other branches of the family flourished in Krauchenwies , Hasenweiler and Zußdorf . Since the 16th century, the Menninger Gremlich even took over the coats of arms and names of the extinct noble lords of Jungingen through marriage . For example, Jakob Gremlich von Jungingen zu Menningen is named in a letter to Salem on July 8, 1580.

The line of the Gremlich family became extinct with the death of Johann Gremlich in 1664. In his will, the devout lord decreed that, like his ancestors, he wanted to find his final resting place in the church in Menningen under the arch of the choir. After death, the small knighthood of Menningen fell back to the Messkirch lordship in 1664.

The two coats of arms of the Gremlich with the silver field and the upright black ibex are still in the parish church as a reminder of the Gremlich family, who shaped the village for centuries. In the community seal, as well as in the coats of arms of the Menninger clubs, the ibex, the heraldic animal of Gremlich, is shown and proudly worn on club clothing.

In the Middle Ages, Menningen had a special attraction as a market town until around 1792, thanks to the various rulers in the moated castle and also after the Reich Knights Gremlich died out in 1664.

Menningen and Leitishofen came to the Baden district of Meßkirch in 1806 with the Princely-Fürstenberg Oberamt Meßkirch .

But there were also quarrels between the Menningers and their neighbors from the other bank, the Leitishofern. So in 1831 the Menninger played out their power and blocked routes for outsiders. It was not until 1932 that the smaller village of Leitishofen was merged with Menningen, and staff ownership in the village was finally abolished.

The community reform meant that Menningen was incorporated into Meßkirch on January 1, 1974, after a voluntary integration contract was signed. In 2012, 456 residents (232 female, 224 male [as of December 31, 2012]) lived in the village. Today it is estimated at around 500 inhabitants in Menningen.

Partnerships

Since 1978 Menningen has maintained a partnership-based exchange with Menningen / Saar, a suburb of the city of Merzig , which is similar in size and structure to Menningen in Baden. The friendship grew out of an initial relationship between the sports clubs, which expanded to almost all clubs in both towns.

Culture and sights

Buildings

Catholic Parish Church of St. John
  • The most important sight in Menningen is the parish church of St. Johannes, which since the most recent renovation presents itself in new splendor, again with baroque furnishings. The former Meßkirch branch became an independent parish in 1632 thanks to the foundations of the local lord Hans Gremlich, although it has not been occupied for more than 30 years. Today's church building dates from 1725 and is the work of Messkirch court architect Johann Georg Brix. Another artist from Messkirchen, the baroque painter Jakob Lenz, made the two side altar paintings depicting the death of St. Joseph and the torture of St. Sebastian. The ceiling paintings, also made by Lenz, fell victim to a historical renovation in 1882. The church owes valuable works of art to the Lords of Gremlich: a late Gothic crucifix carved in 1494, the very noteworthy earlier high altar painting with the Visitation of Mary from 1650 or two artistically carved death shields, which are reminiscent of the former local lords buried under the church. In 2015 the church tower with its five church bells was renovated. The large bell with the year 1565, the small baptismal bell from the 13th century and the bells from the 1950s were fitted with a wooden bell cage when the tower was renovated.
  • The fourteen helper chapel, popularly known as the “Käpelle”, is enthroned on a hill north of Menningen. The current building of the Fourteen Helpers Chapel dates from the 19th century, but the origins of the chapel are lost in the darkness of history. In March 2008 - due to open and burning candles that were probably too narrowly placed - the interior was very heavily covered with soot, so that it was necessary to refresh it with paint. The newly renovated interior of the chapel was blessed in July 2008 during the hail procession. The Hofmann siblings from Igelswies have flower arrangements set up at the site again and again.

  • The stately moated castle Menningen goes back to an older moated castle. A large moat, which was built around the whole castle and could be flooded by the nearby Ablach, served as security. Access was then only possible via a drawbridge. Prince Froben Ferdinand von Fürstenberg had the old moated castle converted into a three-storey, baroque castle in 1732, which from then on served the Meßkircher Hof as a pleasure and hunting palace. After the Meßkirch residence went out, the castle served as a Fürstenberg forester's house for some time before the manor was sold piece by piece by the Princely House in Donaueschingen and in 1852 the castle itself was also sold to the parish as a parsonage. The interior of the building is particularly impressive due to the spaciousness of the rooms and the original baroque roof structure. The monument in need of renovation has been largely empty for some time.
  • The Gasthof zum Adler in Leitishofen was first mentioned in 1423 as a holy fiefdom for the maintenance of the church in Menningen and is run by the sixth generation of the Bücheler family. Around 1800 the inn in Leitishofen was called the "Golden Eagle".
  • The grave of the unknown soldier is located on Engelswieser Sträßle . The soldiers' memorial commemorates the battle of Meßkirch on May 5, 1800, in which 7,000 dead remained after a 13-hour battle.

Natural monuments

The natural sights of Menningen include:

Natural bridge in the "rock valley"
  • The natural monument rock valleys , see Steinrinne rock valleys, caves & stream infiltration
  • Between Menningen and Engelswies in the massive Tithon limestone (ti1, Weißjura ζ3, hanging bank limestone), the water created extensive fields of sinkholes. The up to 50 sinkholes have a diameter of up to 25 meters and a depth of up to four meters. 1500 meters northwest of Menningen, two entrances open at the bottom of a secured sinkhole with a diameter of eight meters and a depth of six meters. While the eastern corridor ends after a few meters, the western corridor after eight meters leads to the “Menninger Schacht”, a natural monument protected by the Tübingen administrative district under the name of the “Menninger Schachthöhle”. After a shaft 35 meters deep, a 15 meter corridor is followed by another 25 meter deep shaft and another 14 meter crawl passage. The cave can only be entered with appropriate experience and equipment.

Regular events

  • During the carnival season , village life is shaped by the figures of the Menningen fox guild : the Menninger foxes, the black fox, the little foxes, the gausmates, the guild presidium, the master of ceremonies, the jester, the standard bearer, the flag group and the narre policeman. During this time the neck name Schäke can also be found. It is not clear where the expression comes from, with which the Menninger and Gögginger refer to each other. That is simply a derogatory expression for something inferior, some speculate. “Schäken” (derived from the French jacket) is actually used to refer to worn coats and jackets, as they are said to have been worn by the poorer Menningers in the past - in contrast to the better-dressed, richer Göggingern. Schäken, another version, also means looking obliquely, condescendingly. So you looked down at each other with disdain. The Schäken from Göggingen used to go to the market through Menningen to Meßkirch and the Menninger “g'schäket” a bit condescendingly.
  • The “church patronage” of St. John the Baptist has been the occasion for years to meet on the village square after the festive service and to celebrate the “village square festival” together. In the past few years, the proceeds of the festival were made available for local purchases or social institutions. The “Dorfplatzfest” is currently no longer actively taking place.
  • The Menningen parish traditionally holds the so-called hail procession every year . The procession has its origins in the years 1868 and 1906, when a storm with heavy hail fell over Menningen during the church patronage festival on June 24th, causing great damage in the corridors and buildings and leaving behind poverty. Hailstones, some of which were the size of chicken eggs, smashed all the roofs and windows. The torrential rain that set in flooded the whole village, fields and meadows. Out of this need, the Menninger promised to hold a procession every year before the harvest time to the so-called Hagelkreuz created by the community in 1907 in the Hofstatt on Engelswieser Weg. Afterwards, a Eucharistic celebration will be held in the open air at the Fourteen Holy Helpers Chapel.
  • Three-day shed festival by the Menningen band in the Menninger “shed”. The Schuppenfest takes place annually and provides entertainment, food and more for a draw for people who live nearby.

Economy and Infrastructure

traffic

Street

Around 1770 the first long-distance connection Ulm - Freiburg , today's federal highway 311 , which runs through Leitishofen, was built.

train

The double village of Menningen-Leitishofen was connected to rail traffic in 1875 with the Radolfzell – Mengen railway line . The railway line runs parallel, to the right the Ablach on the Leitishofer area. The Menningen-Leitishofen train station was south of the Ablach. In 1969, the passenger traffic on the so-called Hegau-Ablachtal-Bahn was stopped, which was followed by the stop of freight traffic for economic reasons.

Established businesses

Today's village of Menningen had a rural structure for many centuries. The structural change intensified in the 1970s and 1980s, when the village developed more into a place of residence and there were infrastructural changes in the field of agriculture. In 2005, the 14 hectare industrial area north of the federal road 311 near Leitishofen was developed for 1.3 million euros in a first section. Today there are several companies that have their headquarters, a hall or a center there. Currently these are Fecht, Deutsche Post, Bix, ZG and other companies. Further construction phases are still necessary.
