I would rather stay broke is the first solo album by German rapper Vega . It was released on October 9, 2009 on the Butterfly Music label .

History of origin

I would rather stay broke was announced in September 2007, when Vega was still under contract with separate label Buckwheats Music . Back then it was supposed to be released as a mixtape to give a taste of Vegas' first solo album. In 2006 Vega released the collab album German Problems together with Separate , followed by the solo EP Adlerjunge a year later . A few months later he published the Freetrack Exclusive , in which he announced the release of Lieber ich broke . However, after Buckwheats left in early 2008, the release was put on hold for the time being. In an interview in late summer, Vega stated that she wanted to release the album by the end of the year at the latest. In December 2008, the founding of Vegas' new label Butterfly Music was announced, which was supposed to be published broke about it. After a few guest posts on albums by other rappers and freetracks, Lieber I remain broke was finally announced in September.

The title referred to the text passage And I'd rather stay broke, your Olle gets a sausage in a dressing gown like Wiener in croissants from German Problems , the title track on the eponymous collab album with Separate.

“The title came about from a line from the album German Problems at the time. The title best describes my attitude. I'd rather stay broke with the music I make than start making bad music and get rich with it. "

- Vega

“I'd rather stay broke than have 15 techno beats cobbled together and rap on them badly! Each listener has their own idea of what comes after the title, hence three points at the end of the sentence. And: I'd rather get rich as the manager of a supermarket chain before I abuse rap to make cash. "

- Vega

Vega also raps on the song WAR , which appeared on a mixtape by the Russian rapper 'Серёга in 2009 , the line And I'd rather stay broke than sign lies .

The cover shows a photo of Vega from a frog's perspective , in which he - leaning against a railing - looks to the right. On the sky are black clouds that seem to pass him. Vega wears jeans pants and a black leather jacket . In the lower part of the picture there is the lettering Vega in gray-white color - I'd rather stay broke , half of the V of Vega depicts an eagle with a crown. The eagle is very similar to the one in the coat of arms of the city of Frankfurt and the logo of the Eintracht Frankfurt soccer club . Vega is an avowed fan of Eintracht Frankfurt.

In the booklet there are more photos as well as the thanks Vegas. Also some song quotes from Vegas songs I am , Our souls are free , Is what and 2 seconds . It also shows a photo montage in which the logo of the Butterfly Music label is on a stone wall . The blank CD is printed in black and white and shows a photo of Vegas clenching his fists. The back cover shows another photo that is similar to the front cover. However, it was taken from a bird's eye view and shows Vega looking over the rooftops of Frankfurt from an elevated position. Again the sky is covered with black clouds. Next to it is the lettering Dear I'll stay broke . Below is the tracklist and further details.

The artwork was designed by B166er. The photos used were taken by Ondro Ovesny.

Guest Posts

Only two tracks on the album contain guest contributions . For example, Vegas' Butterfly Music label partner at the time can be heard on Praline . On turn off , the two rappers Kool Savas and Ercandize are each represented with a verse , and the chorus was sung by Moe Mitchell. The contact with Kool Savas came about through the mammoth remix of The Evidence , which was published on Kool Savas' album John Bello Story II and contained a contribution by Vega. For the album, Vega asked Ercandize and Kool Savas, who accepted immediately.

production

Most of the production was done by Emonex, who was the main producer of Butterfly Music at the time . He produced the tracks Inferno , Ich bin , Praline , Goldene Wings , Forever Pt. I , world , When the rest of the world was sleeping , When the boy comes and moments . The remaining producers each contributed a beat . So Intro was produced by Johnny Pepp . The background music to Die Jungs von der Bushalte comes from M-Crisis, while Big Flexx contributed the beat to eight hundred and twenty. The production of Abturn can be assigned to Marlon Tubach. For two seconds , the distinguished producer Joshimixu responsible. The title Forever Pt. II was produced by Matbeats. On When the Devil Called Me, Vega used a beat from STI.

There were discussions about the beat to the video single König ohne Krone , which the French rapper Nessbeal used for his single Roi sans couronne (French: King without a crown ) back in 2008 . However, the original beat was also produced by Shuko . As part of these discussions, Vega published a statement in which he said that he had not stolen the beat, but only "took over the name and Shuko's beat and made his version of it". Vega originally planned to release the song as a free track because of the beat. The winter beat was also used by the French rapper Soprano in 2007 for his title track to Puis qu'il faut vivre . This beat was produced by Mej and Lea Castel.

Both the recording , the mixing and the mastering was done by the executive producer Emonex in his studio. An exception was the title Abturn , which was mixed by Sir Jai.

style

Vega performs his spoken word on typical hip-hop beats. The majority of it is stylistically based on the music in French hip-hop . Sometimes there are also beats with Dirty South elements on Dear me stay broke . This stylistic device is used in particular for the more aggressive titles on the long-playing record.

In the title Welt , characteristic scratches were used at the end for hip-hop . A DJ moves a running record back and forth, which leads to the creation of a sound. In the song mentioned, various text passages were scratched. So the lines “Was Beef, Spast?” And “You are all G, but you're telling us about our life” from Vegas song Is Was was cut. “Ultrakaos Frankfurt am Main, - shit - I kill you” was also used as a cut. This quote is from the street rotation video. Most recently, in Welt, the text “Nobody can stop me, because I'll bomb you to pieces” was scratched by Azad's song Ghettobass . Vega is an avowed fan of Azad.

marketing

The album was only physically available through the shop of Vegas' label Butterfly Music at the time and in a few shops. Groove Attack took over the digital distribution . Classic Media was responsible for the promotion. In the run-up to the release, three trailers for Lieber I stay broke were released . Well-known rappers like Favorite , Olli Banjo , Kool Savas , Casper or Abroo briefly talked about the album.

On September 28th, a so-called snippet was made available for free download. Some of the tracks from the album were played briefly to give the listener an impression. The transitions are similar to that of a mixtape , as they are moderated and accompanied by a DJ .

As part of the publication of Lieber I remain broke , five free tracks were released. In March, the title Keiner gehts exclusively published on hiphop.de. At the beginning of November the hiphop.de-Exclusive Koma Remix was also released . The original title Koma appeared on Blaze's debut album Karma in September . In addition to Blaze and Vega, Jonesmann , Haftbefehl and Favorite were also represented on the remix . On the day of the publication of Dear I stay broke , rap.de beamed the freetrack What about you? which was produced by Johnny Pepp. Another exclusive track was released by HipHop-Jam.net in mid-October. There, the title was shake hands for free download offered. The beat was in turn contributed by Johnny Pepp. At the end of November, another song produced by Johnny Pepp was offered for free. It was a remix of the album title Winter , with the text remaining identical.

In addition, Vega was featured on Juice CD # 99, which was enclosed with Juice magazine in the summer of 2009 , with the album track Jungs von der Bushalte .

To dear I stay broke a video appeared. The decoupling was turned to the title King without a crown . The clip was produced by Frameworkx Filmproduktion . Another video was established in May 2010 through the web format Shut up broadcast. It was a video editing waived. In the video the freetrack What about you? published a few months earlier. The contribution to the series was published in June 2010 on the sampler Halt die Fresse Nr. 2 . Vega also contributed a song to the Streetrotation web series from the hip-hop platform 16Bars . An exclusive verse was rapping, for which a video was also shot.

criticism

The Internet platform HipHop-Jam awarded four of a total of five mics. In particular, the diversity and the voice of Vegas were praised, which “can easily put itself in any state of mind without sounding forced or falsified”. The short playing time of the sound carrier was mainly criticized. All in all, the author called Lieber ich bin ich broke as a compact rap album without any real failure that proves the potential of the performer.

Rap4Fame gave the album four out of five possible crowns and came to a similar end result. Here, too, the authentic lyrics, especially in the more profound songs, were positively highlighted. The beats that "create a wonderful, dark, dreary atmosphere" were also praised. The editor described Lieber ich bin broke as a demanding street rap album that has no real highlight and is convincing due to its authenticity and instrumentalisation.

rappers.in rated the sound carrier with five and a half out of six microphones. The conclusion is also similar to that of Rap4Fame and HipHop-Jam . Vega knows how to use “texts to beat values and truths into our auditory canals without verbal detours, without appearing dull. He manages not to drift into the unbelievable and thus finally to offer a broken German youth a realistic identification platform: away from firearms, towards bare fists, out of utopian expensive cars, into the bus stop houses and youth clubs ”.

MeinRap described Better I stay broke as an album that " adds a pleasantly authentic nuance to the street rap genre". Once again, the authenticity and honest reflections were cited as the album's strengths. On the other hand, the choice of features was criticized, as these songs in particular are unnecessary and superfluous and cannot be inserted into the album. Another flaw is the jumbled-up songs, some of which seem unfinished. Nevertheless, the author attested to Vega great potential, which is still too often given away.

The editorial staff of Rapspot rated Vegas debut as a good album with a successful selection of beats and well-considered lyrics. The point of criticism was both the lack of experimentation, which Vega could quickly "make sound too monotonous and boring", as well as the rather poor recording quality. The guest contributions by Moe Mitchell, Kool Savas, Face and Ercandize were also rated negatively. Another downside is the relatively short term of most titles. Editor Andre, on the other hand, praised the variety of dark songs like Inferno and more soulful songs like Winter , although the feelings "don't sound really real, but rather played". So be the song Forever Pt. I “very sad and touching, but true emotions will most certainly sound different”. Rapspot rated I'd rather stay broke with three and a half stars out of five.
