The Liga Mexicana de Béisbol (German : Mexican Baseball League ) is the highest professional baseball league in Mexico . Along with the International League and the Pacific Coast League from the USA, it is one of three leagues in North America that are classified as Triple-A, making it the highest classification of minor league baseball . The LMB is an independent league, no team belongs to an MLB team, but some teams have signed employment contracts with the MLB for players.

It is also the highest ranked baseball league outside of the United States . In contrast to the Liga Mexicana del Pacífico , which is played in winter, it mainly takes place in the summer months. The LMB record champions are the Diablos Rojos del México with 15 titles (most recently in 2008).

League structure and game system

The league, which has been held since 1925, consists of two zones ( divisions ), a north and a south zone, each with eight teams. Each team plays in the two individually rated halves of the season 53 games in the first and 54 in the second half of the season in the regular season from March to July. For the placements in one half of the season there is a point system with 8 points for the first to 4 for the eighth. On the basis of these points, three teams in each zone qualify for the play-offs. The team with the best win / loss ratio of all other teams in a zone constitutes the fourth play-off team in its zone.

These four teams in each zone then play in playoff mode in July and August for the zone win (Campeon de la Zona Norte / Sur). The zone winners then play for the league title in the final series. In 2009 the new championship cup , the La Copa de Zaachila , was awarded. All playoff games are played in best-of-seven mode.

history

In 1925 the Liga Mexicana de Béisbol (LMB) was founded as the first professional league in Mexico . The 6 founding clubs came from the region around Mexico City , Guanajuato and Veracruz : 74 Regimiento, Club México, Agraria de México, Nacional de México, Club Guanajuato and Rojos del Águila de Veracruz

In 1937 this league established itself with 15 teams beyond the borders of central Mexico, including the Monterrey Industriales , the Nuevo Laredo Tecolotes and the Torreón Algodoneros .

In 1955 the Liga Mexicana de Béisbol (LMB) was on the verge of collapse, but was then saved under new league management, which among other things agreed on a contractual cooperation with the then purely American professional league Major League Baseball (MLB).

In 1973 the Mexican League (LMB), with 16 teams, was divided into 4 divisions: Northeast; Northwest; Southeast and southwest , divided. 1979 even increased to 20 teams.

Since 1981 the LMB has played with 16 teams and since 1983 again in a north and a south division. The most successful team so far are the Diablos Rojos del México from DF (Mexico City), with 16 championship titles, followed by the Sultanes de Monterrey with 9 titles.
