Origin and meaning

The name is mostly given today due to the similarity of sound to lily . The word lily may originally come from a language of the western Mediterranean countries for flower. It can safely be traced back to the Eastern Mediterranean, where the Madonna lily became the first known ornamental plant. The white lily has been a symbol of purity and beauty, but also of death, since ancient times. In Christianity the lily was considered to have pagan connotations until the Middle Ages. Only later, via the detour of the biblical Susanna (from Hebrew Shushan "lily"), the Madonna lily became a symbol of purity in the Christian language of forms due to its brilliant white color and thus received its name.

A historical derivation for the origin of the name is from Elisabeth via the pet forms Lilli and Lillian .
