List of municipalities in the Wesermarsch district
The list of municipalities in the Wesermarsch district gives an overview of the nine smallest administrative units in the district . Three of the municipalities are cities . Nordenham is a medium-sized town , the district town of Brake and Elsfleth are small towns .
The district was founded in the course of the Oldenburg administrative reform in 1933 from the offices of Butjadingen , Brake and Elsfleth and part of the office of Varel . The Wesermarsch district got its current size in the course of the territorial reform carried out in 1974 . The district gave the former municipality of Landwürden on the eastern side of the Weser , which historically belonged to the Grand Duchy of Oldenburg like the entire district , to the district of Cuxhaven .
All communities in the district are unitary communities .
The island of Mellum is neither part of a municipality nor part of a district (→ see section "Affiliation" in the article about the island ).

The district has a total area of 821.92 km 2 . The municipalities of Butjadingen with 129.02 km 2 and Ovelgönne with 123.81 km 2 have the largest area within the district . Two municipalities have an area larger than 110 km 2 , including the city of Elsfleth , one municipality has an area of over 90 km 2 and two municipalities have an area of over 80 km 2 , including the city of Nordenham . The two smallest municipalities have an area of over 30 km 2 , that is, the district town of Brake with 38.18 km 2 and the municipality of Lemwerder with 36.38 km 2 .
The cities of Nordenham with 26,139 inhabitants, Brake with 14,860 inhabitants and Elsfleth with 9114 inhabitants have the largest share of the population of the district of 88,583 inhabitants. Of the remaining municipalities, two each have over 7,000, 6,000 and 5,000 inhabitants. The three smallest municipalities in terms of population are Butjadingen with 6049 inhabitants, Jade with 5830 and Ovelgönne with 5176 inhabitants.
The entire Wesermarsch district has a population density of 108 inhabitants per km 2 . The cities of Brake with 389 inhabitants per km 2 and Nordenham with 300 have the greatest population density within the district , followed by the municipality of Lemwerder with 196. All other municipalities have a population density of less than 100 inhabitants per km 2 . The most sparsely populated communities are Jade with 62, Butjadingen with 47 and Ovelgönne with 42 inhabitants per km 2 .
