The list of municipalities in the district of Göttingen gives an overview of the 39 smallest administrative units in the district . The district underwent major territorial changes on January 1, 1973 and November 1, 2016.

The district can be further subdivided into the four integrated communities of Dransfeld , Gieboldehausen , Hattorf am Harz and Radolfshausen .
The cities of Bad Lauterberg in the Harz , Bad Sachsa , Duderstadt , Göttingen , Hann. Münden , Herzberg am Harz and Osterode am Harz , like the areas of Adelebsen and Bovenden and the municipalities of Bad Grund (Harz) , Friedland , Gleichen , Rosdorf , Staufenberg and Walkenried, are unitary municipalities.
The district has a total area of 1,753.41 km² . The municipality of Gleichen has the largest area within the district with 128.94 square kilometers. This is followed by the Dransfeld community with 122.42 square kilometers, the cities of Hann. Münden with 121.12 square kilometers, Göttingen with 116.89 square kilometers, Osterode am Harz with 102.47 square kilometers and the municipality of Gieboldehausen with 104.7 square kilometers. The city of Duderstadt has an area of 95.62 square kilometers and the municipality of Staufenberg is 77.7 square kilometers. The Adelebsen area is 75.85 square kilometers and the Friedland community 75.68 square kilometers. This is followed by the city of Herzberg am Harz with 71.88 square kilometers, the combined municipality of Radolfshausen with 68.34 square kilometers, the municipality of Rosdorf with 66.46 square kilometers and the Bovenden area with 63.66 square kilometers. The smallest municipality in the district is Elbingerode with 5.66 square kilometers.
The city of Göttingen has the largest proportion of the district's population of 326,041 inhabitants with 118,911 inhabitants. Far behind are the cities of Osterode am Harz with 21,563, Hann. Münden with 23,609 and Duderstadt with 20,363 inhabitants. The integrated community of Gieboldehausen, the Flecken Bovenden, the city of Herzberg am Harz, the communities Friedland and Rosdorf and the city of Bad Lauterberg in the Harz have over 10,000 inhabitants. The combined community of Dransfeld, the communities of Gleichen, Bad Grund (Harz) and Staufenberg, the city of Bad Sachsa and the combined communities of Hattorf am Harz and Radolfshausen and the Adelebsen area have over 6000 inhabitants. The Walkenried community has 4297 inhabitants. The smallest municipality in terms of population, Elbingerode, has 444 inhabitants.
The entire district of Göttingen has a population density of 186 inhabitants per square kilometer. The largest population density within the district has the city of Göttingen with 1017 inhabitants per square kilometer, followed by Bilshausen with 258 and the city of Bad Lauterberg im Harz with 247. This is followed by Bad Sachsa with 223, Duderstadt with 213, Osterode am Harz with 210, Walkenried with 205 and Bovenden with 214, followed by Bad Grund (Harz) with 200 and the Flecken Gieboldehausen with 201. The city of Hann. Münden, the municipality of Rhumspringe, the city of Herzberg am Harz and the municipalities of Rosdorf, Friedland and Waake as well as the city of Dransfeld have a population density of over 150.The other municipalities are below the national average of 145. Seven other municipalities have a population density between 100 and 140 Eleven municipalities have a population density of over 60. The four remaining municipalities have the lowest population densities.
