List of municipalities in the district of Peine
The district of Peine is made up of seven unified municipalities , the smallest administrative units in the district. It has existed in this form since January 1, 2015, when the former communities of Ilsede and Lahstedt merged and formed a new community under the name of Ilsede .
The organs of the district, the district council and the district administrator with the district administration , are located in the district town of Peine .
A planned merger of the district with the district of Hildesheim was planned for November 1, 2016. In July 2015, the desired merger failed in a vote in the Hildesheim district council.

The district has a total area of 534.73 km² . The largest area within the district is the city of Peine with 119.65 km². The smallest municipality in terms of area is Lengede with 34.21 km².
The town of Peine with 49,990 inhabitants has the largest share of the population of the district of 134,801 inhabitants, followed by the municipality of Ilsede with 21,738 inhabitants. The two smallest municipalities in terms of population are Hohenhameln with 9,286 residents and Wendeburg with 10,412 residents.
The entire district of Peine has a population density of 252 inhabitants per km². The city of Peine has the greatest population density within the district with 418 inhabitants per km². The least densely populated municipality is Edemissen with 120 inhabitants per km².
